Downloads and Sync media not available when not at home (Android)

Sync music is not available when I’m not connected to my local network and so can’t access the Plex server. So I lose the synced media when I’m not at home and it reappears when I return home. The Plex app also spends a ridiculous amount of time figuring out that it is not connected to the server and so the whole user experience becomes rubbish.

If I’m connected to my local network I can stream higher-res audio, not the lower-res synced music! I want my music when I’m not at home!!!

I spent ages syncing parts off my music collection to my phone (one album at a time; 5 or 6 clicks for each album - really bad ergonomics).

That’s the whole point of Downloads and Sync, surely, and the primary reason I paid for a Plex Pass! It’s one of the features promoted as a reason to get a Plex Pass. I feel cheated. If it isn’t fixed I’ll want a refund.

Not sure if this is the same problem, but I turn off all wireless connections (wifi and cell), and then my synced music is available.

It appears that Plex always attempts to reach the home server, even if the synced music is stored locally on the phone.

It makes no sense.

Yes, that seems to work. But to have to put my phone in airplane mode means it’s not much use as a phone. This needs to be a user config option or a different modes in the client. Plex shouldn’t just assume I have a tunnel or waste my time trying to find one. If I have the technical ability to set that up, I certainly won’t struggle with having to set a config switch in the client to make it check.

@Headsman, I have android and under settings-advanced-player-try checking the prefer synced content and see if this fixes your issue.

I have this setting checked, but the Android Plex app clearly ignores it. It’s obvious that Plex always tries to contact the server, even when there is no reason to.

I have this setting checked too, though I didn’t check it myself and it’s not clear what it means. When I have access to the local network I certainly don’t prefer the synced content, but when away from it I do. However, it makes no difference anyway. When I’m away Plex refuses to cooperate.

I’m having this issue as well. I figured out right away that turning off mobile data fixed the issue and allowed me access to my downloaded content. But that’s really inconvenient. I expect the app to just “know” that the server is no longer local and to access the downloaded content first. I have the “prefer synced content” enabled (seems to be the default) but it doesn’t do anything.

I agree with Headsman, being able to easily download content and know it’s going to work (be convenient) is the main reason I paid for Plex Pass and it doesn’t work. And it has never worked that well even after Plex started major changes after Media Server version 1.14.1.5488 (July 1, 2019 Plex required Media Server version 1.15.8 or higher for future functionality to work). I’d like Plex to acknowledge these issues and please let us know what the plan is.

I’m on Plex Media Server 1.18…6.2368 running on Windows 10 V1903. I’ve got multiple android devices (different OS version levels from old to newest) and the app exhibits the same behavior on all of them.

I run “Netguard” - so technically mobile data is working but I block Plex access to mobile data since I don’t have a large data plan. Plex should automatically access downloaded content (no delay) and pop up access to the server if/when it becomes available, instead of the other way around.

Still have this problem. Fix it!

I agree. I keep checking with each update too see if it’s fixed but nothing. It really doesn’t work as advertised.

When are all the issues with synced content going to be fixed?

I’ll just keep bumping posts on this until we get some answers.

My husband and I have had this problem now for months as well. We too feel cheated by Plex as this was the only feature we want or use from their paid version. I am so glad we only paid monthly, but even at that we have wasted several months of fees because I was hoping Plex would get it together and fix it shortly. I have seen many other postings with this same issue in the forum over these months, with no solution. This feature did work at one time, before one of their haphazard updates. I am going to go cancel now and watch this thread for any updates.

So this started working for me maybe a week ago. I wasn’t testing it though as I got in the habit of launching my downloaded playlist before I left WiFi. I had made it a habit so I had to do it consciously

So why is it working? I combed the release notes: Plex Media Server - #328 by ahiyahiya

I’m currently on Plex Media Server for Windows V1.18.9.2578. Tested with Android Plex V7.30.1.16475

I came across these two fixes that may have fixed it:

  • 1.18.6.2348 (beta Feb 3 / general Feb 10)
(Performance) Speed up connectivity tests and library discovery (#10930)

  • Version 1.18.8.2461 (beta Feb 26, skipped to release 1.18.8.2527 March 11)
(DLNA) Don’t start DLNA server after leaving Plex Home (#11061)

Based on shibereit’s post, I’m thinking it might be the DNLA issue. Can everyone please test and report back?

Did you upgrade your server to get it working or just the client? I should have thought it was purely a client issue.

I have the server running on a Synology NAS and it’s running 1.18.5… so doesn’t include those fixes. It still appears to not work for me :frowning:

I observed the same undesirable behavior and my Plex Server is already on 1.19.1.2645 running on Windows. I would like this to be fixed as well because keeping a phone in airplain mode just to see the offline content is definitely a bug here.
