I’ve tried everything. I’ve waited for updates and fixes. Downloads simply don’t work. Perhaps they do in a more simple network environment where a DNS hack is possible but I suspect most Plex folks aren’t in that simple consumer environment. I’m frustrated and will try and contain that for this post. Like many of us, I travel a lot. Plex was my go-to and I haven’t been able to take my media on the go for over a year.
My server is Ubuntu 21. It’s local to my LAN and I have remote access through port forwarding.
My dns is BIND 9.16 which forwards to my router which is unbind as has an override for Plex.local as a local domain.
My clients are all iOS. All enrolled in the TestFlight betas.
Downloads don’t work locally, over VPN, or outside the network. They don’t work it I change my devices’ DNS to 8.8.8.8. It just never downloads.
Is there any way to get Sync back or has anyone found a reliable 3rd party client? How can I get my media downloaded to my devices when I travel short of literally copying the files off the server manually and using VNC?
I know this will likely be of no help, but they work for me, at least thus far in travel situations. Maybe there’s a piece in here that will provide a path to a solution:
QNAP Server running Plex Media Server bare metal install (latest Beta)
Samsung Devices (Android Z Fold, and Tab S6)
Remote access through port forwarding via Netgear Router connected to AT&T Fiber access point.
I download the files at home (or at the destination location) over WiFi with no special DNS settings that I am aware of. No double NAT situations or anything out of the ordinary. I’ve also been able to download over a Southwest Airline Wifi once.
Have you tried downloading over a Cell connection on your phone, yet? Or from a friends place? (would remove some parts of your network as the root cause)
Assume standard remote access gives you no trouble?
Downloads don’t work for me at all either. I’m also running PMS on Ubuntu, and Plex on iOS. Often pressing download on media pops up a window without any options and the download button does nothing. Other times I get a “400 bad request” error popping up when I try to press download. Very occasionally I manage to download an episode. But most of the downloads I’ve setup fail to ever turn into media I can watch offline on my device.
It’s infuriating that the main feature I pay for Plex pass, sync, was removed for a feature which does not seem to work.
I’d be quite happy to help fix it, but there is no support channel and no open source project. I feel like I can no longer rely on Plex, and need to look for a new solution entirely
It does make me feel slightly better that others are experiencing the same problem. And it sounds like things work better on Android (which I’d also seen reported elsewhere). As a subscriber, I’m really frustrated - it is the number one reason to pay for Plex.
