Downloads sucks and doesn’t work “Error downloading item”

and the last persons comment actually resolved my issue… :astonished:

re-installed the app and now it works… after years… YEARS!

I’ve certainly experienced my share of frustration with downloads since the new system was put into place.

I had also noticed that my Plex storage on my iPad was pushing 150GB, and there was no way that the movies I had in there were taking up that much room. I reasoned that it had been years since I had nuked-and-paved Plex on my iPad, going back to the “before times” with Downloads/Sync systems.

So last night I deleted Plex from my iPad (and watched all my space open up), downloaded the Plex Beta for iPadOS, and proceeded to re-download everything I had in there previously.

25GB used.

And every download succeeded perfectly (I was on my home Wi-Fi connection, so everything was happening locally). Transcodes on-the-fly worked fine, and it all happened really quickly.

Perhaps that’s part of the answer here? :crossed_fingers:

@DaveTheNerd Did you do these in the background? i.e. With iPad locked or with some other app in the foreground?

As long as I leave my iPad unlocked and Plex in the foreground with the “Downloads” window open, everything works ok. As soon as I switch to another app or if the auto-screenlock triggers, then everything fails.

Can you try “try-again” and start a download and then lock your ipad and see if it finishes? Or even just open another app and leave that app in the foreground instead of Plex?

I’d be 111% happy to Nuke-and-Pave™ Plex on all our devices if that will fix it…but that’s a lot of effort and I’d like confirmation first. I’m skeptical because we’ve heard nothing from any employees on this. It is entirely plausible that the two issues are unrelated but without aforementioned feedback from an insider it is impossible to know.

Post back if you can.

If he doesn’t I will.

I too had abandoned the download feature on my iPad then recently discovered it seems to be working far better.

I can’t vouch that the iPad stayed focused/unlocked at the time but will happily test this for you and report back.

Unfortunately it’s gonna be the weekend before I probably get chance.
Feel free to PM me a reminder at the weekend in case I forget.

The results are finally in.
All downloads failed with the iPad locked or indeed if Plex doesn’t have focus.

Thank you. So background downloading still not implemented…the wait continues.
