[ds118] Plex Pass / Enable Hardware Acc

Server Version: 1.18.9.2578

I have a brandnew DS118 (Synology). Installed Plex Media Server 64version manually, but i dont see the hardware enable modus.

I have also Plexx pass.

To use Hardware-Accelerated Streaming in Plex Media Server, you need to enable it using the Plex Web App.
And using the following tutorial.

  1. Open the Plex Web app.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Server > Transcoder to access the server settings.
  3. Turn on Show Advanced in the upper-right corner to expose advanced settings.
  4. Turn on Use hardware acceleration when available.

  5. Click Save Changes at the bottom.

Is it me…or…

AFAIK changing the hardware acceleration settings needs a restart of the NAS. Try to reboot the DS.

That device does not support HW transcoding AFAIK. You can view the compatibililty list here https://support.plex.tv/articles/201373803-nas-compatibility-list/

Did that already. No success.

Also what i noticed:
If I play a movie via plexmediaserver > chromecast > tv they playback is not as smooth as I thought it would be.

If I play the movie directly on my tv (source synology) its still beter (more smooth, not even a buffer).

Ubifiy network. Cat7.
Love to hear your advice

Ps: just tested a movie that does not need transcoding

From my experience, plex media server on ds118 performance is little bit poor.
Checked out the following situations:

  • Plex on my sony tv (via web) - because Opera do not support the TV’s of Sony anymore, so it;s like a web player version. It sucked
  • Tried on Plex Player on PS4, that also sucked big time, because the ps4 is always transcoding (if you have subs, ps4 always transcodes)
  • Tried Chromecast direct play and it’s way better, but if I compare it to with direct play from the television, that far more the best situation. Any tips to improve?
  • On my Iphone XR really good

Only my Sony TV is old (2007), no h.265 support.

This means I have to buy a decent player, like atv 4k or shield i guess

I can always send the DS118 back and buy a 218+
Want to create situation that my friend (in other city) can login to plex server and watch remote (does not have to be 4k, just 720p or 1080p its fine).

But i found it really frustrating that the ds118 is lacking performance.

" 4K Ultra HD video transcoding

Powered by a brand new 64-bit quad-core processor, DS118 delivers excellent data transfer speed and 10-bit 4K H.265 video transcoding on the fly."\

Whats your experience with the 218+

If I may provide input on the “4K Ultra HD video transcoding” ?

You only get that when you use Synology’s proprietary software (Video Station).

Unfortunately, Synology doesn’t license all the codecs so you still come up short.

IMO, Marketing has been very clever and found ONE case that works so they can claim the capability.

If you can exchange it, get the 64 bit Intel CPU.

I actually going to fix a old computer. A dell studio hybrid, 3gb, ssd and now a pentium dualcore cpu. I am going to replace the cpu to a core2duo 2.6 ghz.

OS: ubuntu

I installed ubuntu correctly, but connecting the synology to ubuntu (mount nfs) is really a pain the …

But this way i use the nas, as storage.

The C2D predates hardware transcoding.

You gain nothing by using this CPU.

You will need an i3/i5/i7-3xxx CPU or a J3xxx CPU to have hardware acceleration.

If you wish HEVC capability, you will need the -7xxx family of the desktop processors and the J3455 CPU
