DSD and PLEX . . . do they play together?

I am under the impression that the PLEX Media Server cannot process DSD audio files, or at least not without some complex jerry-rigging. I suspect even it I could install a few DSD audio files within PLEX the media player would transcode them to some less PCM format.

But I am wondering whether this transcoding will occur if I were only to access the DSD audio files in my LAN, and not be making it available to the WAN?

UPDATE: I just now spoke with the people at PS Audio about their Octave Records operation. This new business is producing high-quality music in DSD format. I gather from them that the only way to play DSD encoded music is to have a DSD compatible disc player and a DSD capable DAC.

So, PLEX may be out of the question.

Please advise.

Plex does work with DSD, but it resamples to PCM. I use Roon for my serious music playback.

Is Roon an alternative to PLEX for audio? What do you like better about it?

Roon is much much better than PMS. It’s dedicated to music and supports many features that are absent from PMS. It has support for Bitperfect output and native DSD if your DAC supports it. Also it can cast through Airplay to compatible devices or through their proprietary RAAT protocol with High Resolution support. Their integration with streaming is way better and also the local library is much better scanned and indexed. The UI is also more responsive because it is build with .NET and not a web framework.

But it’s more expensive and offers only yearly subscriptions without any content. In contrast PMS costs about the same with the Tidal addon. And of course it doesn’t have any video support.
