There is no support for DSD in Plex. Hence why it is converted when played in any Plex client.
This is just really weird. I run both Plex and Universal Media Server, and both just seem hopelessly flaky, both on my Ultra HD Blu-ray/DVD player (Sony UPB-X800M2, which will play SACDs and DSD up to 128 fs) and my AVR (Denon AVR-X3400H): some times, one will run properly and the other won’t (and vice versa), which makes troubleshooting a joy.
When I posted my question last night, I was playing a recording of Das Lied von der Erde though the Sony using Plex, and, using the Info button on the Denon’s remote, it quite clearly indicated that what was being played as PCM.
Earlier this afternoon, however, I played the same recording directly through the AVR itself, again using Plex, and the Info pop-up indicated what was being played was DSD, which seems very peculiar to me.
Do you have any explanation for this (other than that the Denon is lying to me)?
Also: Are you aware of any options out there, ideally free/libre, that will play DSD files? I’m outputting to my AVR using an HDMI output, so can only play DSD files (as DSD) via a media server (or, alternatively, a USB stick).
As ever, any assistance is gratefully appreciated.
