DTS-HD passthrough not working on new Fire TV Cube (3rd)

Just forget about the Plex client (on the Cube). Use PMS as a back-end and the latest KODI Omega (v21) development build. Both TrueHD and DTS-HD (MA/X/HR) playback flawlessly using passthrough. There’s only a minor sync issue with E-AC3 Atmos which I’m confident about that it will be solved. It’s currently still in its Alpha phase. A temporary work-a-round is to disable passthrough for E-AC3 in KODI’s settings.

Kodi 20.1 provides the same experience no need to run the Alpha version to get a working experience for movies with DTS/TrueHD(I use it for movies and the Plex client for shows). I think it also seems to work better on high rate files 100Mb+ as it mounts via NFS4 instead of using the Plex webserver. It also has the benefit of never doing the random (copy) transcodes that the Plex client likes to do so much.

The issue with Kodi is:

  1. The Ui is awful compared to stock Plex.
  2. Telling my friends to buy the firecube and then having them try to figure out how to get Kodi up and working on it is a near impossible task.

Kodi is not the solution.

  1. If you think Kodi’s UI is “awful” you’re clearly a novice. Its interface is fully customizable; you could even make ik look like Plex if you wanted.

  2. You shouldn’t tell your friends to buy a Cube. You should tell them to buy a Fire TV Stick 4K Max or Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) if they value lossless audio.

I’ve bought the Cube just for its AV1 and VP9 support (which the Shield lacks) and wanted to see if passthrough worked as (originally) advertised.

I’m confident that the DTS (core) issue will eventually be solved, but Plex won’t ever support full blown DTS-HD (X/MA/HR) on the Cube.

Kodi is currently the only solution if you’d like to passthrough all audio formats, whether you like it or not.

Any update on this please?

Just to still confirm, the Cube cannot passthrough TrueHD or DTS-HD MA with the Plex app?

It is able to passthrough TrueHD for most AV Receivers.
But there are a few Receivers and Soundbars (nearly all Samsung) which seem to be discovered by the Cube as not beeing able to play Dolby MAT and TrueHD. Tho they support both or them. - Still waiting for a fix from Amazon.
(more here Amazon Digital and Device Forums - US )

For DTS: only the Core is played. - Currently only Kodi can pass DTS-HD MA and DTS:X through.
