Fire Cube (3rd Gen) DTS and TrueHD Not working

I have a brand new fire cube (3rd Gen) that has a new software update to enable DTS and True HD pass through.
The Plex app doesn’t pass through, it still transcodes. Will it need to be updated to work? I have an Apple TV at the moment and wanted to use the fire cube just as a Plex client as I could get all the audio codec through it, but it just won’t work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Out of interest, is everyone replied to as it’s been a few days now. Has anyone got this to work?

[/quote]I don’t have a 3rd gen cube yet.

I’m following because I’ll buy a 3rd gen cube (to replace my 1st gen) as soon as this is working in Plex.

I played something on mine(gen3) that was DTS but I think there might be multiple “flavors” of DTS. This one does directplay.

Audio
ID : 2
Format : DTS
Format/Info : Digital Theater Systems
Codec ID : A_DTS
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 1 509 kb/s
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Channel layout : L R
Sampling rate : 48.0 kHz
Frame rate : 93.750 FPS (512 SPF)
Bit depth : 24 bits
Compression mode : Lossy

Any news on this from the actual Plex team?

That is amazing to hear! Maybe @ChuckPa or @anon18523487 can provide an info when this software update will be ready to Amazon Fire Cube & TV sticks.

Plex has to update their Android TV app. Should happen sometime in January (holidays, vacation, etc…).

Monitor the Plex Android TV beta announcement thread for updates.

Scroll to bottom and change Normal to Watching to be notified of new posts to the thread.

That’s strange. In my experience TrueHD passthrough is fully working, but DTS-HD is converted to multichannel PCM instead just passing through. I would love to see this fixed though. I don’t have this issue on the Shield TV Pro (2019). Only the Fire TV Cube (3rd) seems to suffer from this.

If I'm not mistaken, the topic is about lossless audio and this is lossy. Apparently I can’t read, my bad!

You are mistaken, if you’re not then the topic should include DTS passthrough as it doesn’t work properly in the same way that DTS-HD doesn’t.

But also the title clearly states DTS and TrueHD which is in fact newly implemented audio passthrough in the recent FTV Cube firmware update.

What isn’t clear yet is whether any DTS-HD (the lossless DTS) can be passed through, the specs for the new release say DTS-HD (basic profile) passthrough and I don’t know what that means …
maybe no DTS-HD Master Audio … just because Kodi can pass it through doesn’t mean other apps like Plex will be able to pass it through.

In any case it will be very interesting to see what the Plex devs can squeeze out of the Cube’s new firmware release,

But that firmware should also come to AFTV stick 4K MAX, hope to see it get released soon.

Where did you get that info?
I was told, it’s Cube 3 exclusive.

There is no reason for Amazon to bring this to the Fire TV Sticks.

Well because a number of users demand it? And it’s absolutely no problem technical wise for the stick.

Where do they demand it from Amazon?
Is there some official discussion or vote or whatever?
And yes, likely no technical issue - but AFAIK even Passthrough needs license fees to be paid. Which might be to much for such a cheap device.

It gets mentioned for example often in Amazon reviews of the AFTV stick.

Did a quick search for FireTV 4k Max reviews.
Only one on amazon.com mentioned TrueHD and it was only mentioned in one on amazon.de.
So not really a big demand - if Amazon developers would even read reviews.

I think you / they / we need to find other ways to show Amazon that it is in demand.

Good idea. Any suggestions?

Finally got a chance to test with a sound system that has DTS-MA/DTS:X and TrueHD/atmos support. Nothing works the damn thing transcodes basically everything to Opus for some stupid reason. It also seems to cause problems with video playback sometimes(probably because its transcoding unnecessarily for no reason like it likes to do on FireTV).

Plex app version? Has the cube updated to 9.14 yet?

Cube to TV, to soundbar, etc? And what makes/models?

It’s 9.14.0.37895 hooked up directly to the input on a Samsung HW-Q990B. I verified that the files I was testing played back correctly on the XboxSeriesX version of Plex attached to the same soundbar. The transcode reason is “TrueHD audio is not supported by the device” for TrueHD. On DTSMA I get copy (DTS-HD) reason “direct play was attempted but failed, fallen back to transcoding” in that case the audio starts but then if the stream is paused it cannot be resumed again. Sometimes it does DirectPlay DTS-HD but then the audio cuts in and out and just eventually freezes(both audio and video). I did get one DTS-HD MA to play but I can’t seem to figure out what the difference is.

Update: I installed the 9.15 beta to see if the ExoPlayer update did anything. It appears to have no impact.
