DTS-HD Passthrough

Hi,

I just got my Rasplex setup and I cannot find the option to pass through lossless audio like PlexHT. Am I missing the setting?

Preferences->System->Audio Output

No DTS-HD passthrough yet, next release.

Fantastic!  Thanks for the info.

I guess not DTS-HD MA though right Ned?

Who said that?

I'm sure i read the hardware wasn't capable.

This article includes comments from Raspberry Pi engineers. Essentially i didn't think the Pi 2 (for whatever reason) can handle 8 Channels at 192kHz which DTS-HD MA uses. I've read other suggesting that 192kHz is only good up to 4 channels on the Pi2.

To be clear i'm talking about DTS-HD MA Bitstreaming (Passthrough). It seems that the Pi2 can decode DTS-HD MA and output as PCM (which is still great) though whether it can handle the aforementioned bandwidth as PCM to offer full quality i'm not sure.

If you know something different i'm VERY happy to be proved wrong. It would be fantastic if it can bitstream all HD Audio formats or decoding to PCM losslessly.

Prudent quotes from Dom on the above links:

Unfortunately it's not looking promising.
It seems that DTS-MA and TrueHD both require an 8 channel, 192kHz audio stream (even for 48kHz audio) which is something that's never been tried on the hardware,
and so far, doesn't seem to be working.
As a consolation, we should be able to get multi channel PCM working (e.g. for multichannel AAC or PCM streams).

And

I have experimented with sending DTS-MA/TrueHD at 48kHz but the receiver didn't acknowledge it.

AAC5.1 is working on passthrough as LPCM 3/2.1 in next release, still working on DTS-TrueHD/MA passing through as LPCM 3/4.1 @48kHz, needs a bit more work. Watch this space!

Thanks keep up the good work

Looking forward to this, as it would be awfully nice to have the Pi pass through my DTS-HDMA 7.1 streams unmolested. =)

Thanks for all your work, really enjoying it.

Just wanted to drop another big THANK YOU for working on this. DTS-HD passtrough would be really awesome. I guess the only way to speed this up a little is with donations, what I just did. Keep up the good work!

DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD won't be passthrough, they will be decoded by the RPi2 (sorry, won't happen on the RPi1) and the PCM streams sent to the receiver.

Is 48kHz a limitation of the Pi?

Will the Pi2 be able to play back a full 1:1 Blu-ray rip with DTS-HD / True HD?

Any word on DTS-HD MA passthrough? No mention of it in 0.7.0 release notes.

Not really, the guys at raspberry.org don’t seem to think that it will ever happen, sorry.

Darn. What about DTS-HD MA converted to PCM? (Not just the DTS Core).

Does a licensing issue prevent this?

Just to make this clear, are you saying no to DTS-HD passthrough, DTS-HD decoding on the PI2 with LPCM output, or both?

According to this post https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=16821&start=125#p726915, DTS-HD can be decoded on the Pi2 to 48 kHz PCM which can then be passed to your receiver. I’m thinking that that’s as close to full DTS-HD as we’ll get.

That’s good news

Is this DTS-HD only or DTS-HD Master Audio too? (see: DTS-HD vs DTS-HD MA | AVForums)

In either case, when would this functionality be in included in Rasplex, and what Audio settings would we select for this functionality?
