DTS to AC3 Transcoding

Hi,

Maybe this is a feature that is already included with PMS but I have looked around and it doesn't seem quite so. All I could find was a downmix from DTS to Stereo with some mentions of DTS to AC3 in some release notes.

Since PMS is using ffmpeg for transcoding, could you please add a similar option in the PMS settings to enforce DTS to AC3 transcode/downmix whenever a DTS track is detected ?

While that might seem unusual, some devices do not support DTS but do support DD/AC3 just like the Sonos Playbar (soundbar) which I have bought. Most of the movies around there include a DTS track and while stereo is OK, having DD output would be truly great.

Thank you for considering this nice addition =)

Nobody interrested ? Cooommme on =) And moreover, it's only a ffmpeg command so I think it would be quite easy to implement in Plex with only a little checkbox to add! =)

This is a big one for me, as I have a lot of DTS encoded movies to get around cinavia. All I get is loud hash when a DTS movie plays. I had asked for something like this a while back, but I am thinking it doesn't effect too many people..........

Yes, because usually, Sonos must be the only equipment that support DD but to DTS, so only a few would require such a feature.

Yet, I'm sure it would not be much to implement.

As a workaround, there is a script which relies on both Mkvtoolnix/FFMPEG which automatically processes movies: extract DTS track, encode it to AC3 and merge it in the MKV container and keep/trash DTS track if you want as well.

Google it or pm me if you want some more info.

Hi, thanks for the reply, actually I already use MKV2VOB, which gets me the ac3 track, but then I run into cinavia problems on samsung and sony devices. The only way around Cinavia is to use MKV2VOB and retain the DTS track, all it means at the moment is that I have two copies of any cinavia movies. I read in the release of the windows server 0.9.7.18 that the new transcoder had a fix for transcoding DTS to ac3, so not sure why Plex doesn't just transcode DTS when it knows a device can't see it..........actually  I believe that it is fine with a DTS track within the MKV container, but not when it is a VOB.  Cheers

I came across the same detail and was kinda excited about it. But I don't really see where one can set. Any Plex team member can comment about this please ?

This could be way off in accuracy, but I came across this when snooping around.  If you look in PMS Settings -> Transcoder -> Show Advanced Settings you'll see at option, that at least appears like it won't touch the DTS track. Titled "Enable Media Link down-mixing of DTS audio."  Description looks like it's what everyone is looking for.

Again, I could be wrong.

Hi Cody, Even with the DTS downmix enabled it doesn't seem to help with DTS tracks that are contained within a VOB.

As far as I remember and I just double-checked, the details of this option states that it allows downmixing to stereo, not AC3.

My initial point was that some devices do not necessarily support DTS but AC3/AAC (Apple TV if I'm not mistaking or even the product I am concerned with Sonos Playbar which is a receiver which only ouputs DD (2.0/5.1) / Stereo.

Except if you tell me that for instance, setting this option but setting "DD capable receiver" on the Plex client will only downmix to AC3 and if that is the case, that's perfect, it appears there is no such feature.

No news regarding this feature implementation? Regards!

I have read that XBMC 12.1 or more should support this feature on the fly. Is it something that will be integrated on the Mac OS client? That would be great thanks!

EDIT: also, it seems Plex Devs have enabled such a feature for PlexConnect aTV client. Would that be possible to enlarge the scope to anyone who would like to? (I guess this is more a PMS feature than a Plex client one)

hi,

+1 for some sort of dts workaround. i am using rasplex and discussions in the forum point to problems with dts-hd audio streams that crash playback. i would be interested in a solution to transcode dts on pms.

Guys,

I have a Playbar, SUB and 2 Play;1´s to support DD 5.1. The status regarding matter is the following:

Xbmc 11 (Eden) had this feature implemented in the client itself so any Plex build that relied on this build will transcode DTS to AC3 if the "AC3 capable receiver" option is enabled. Looking at the change logs, there's a moment Tobias says they updated their core engine to XBMC 12 (Frodo) which happens to have this feature broken and so was it along for Plex (wonder if it doesn't match the introduction of PHT)

XBMC recently repaired that feature in the October build of their forthcoming Gotham release (XBMC 13) and it works flawlessly.

Now what options are left to Sonos users or any other device that won't decode DTS?

1. Switch back to Laika (haven't tried this but it should work,

2. Wait for the Plex team to update its core engine to XBMC if they plan to do it but even so that won't happen until XBMC 13 final build is released (~ January)

3. Wait for the Plex team to release a client build including the fix for that issue ahead of XBMC 13 release but I do think they have other subjects to work on and it's not clear whether the fix could be applied to the Plex build simply!

4. As the Plex build did for the Apple TV client or any DLNA device, add an option in the PMS to enforce DTS to AC3 to any client or just expand the current Apple TV one to all devices

5. Switch to XBMC in the meantime.

I've listed all the actual options (1. and 5.) alongside the hypothetical ones (2., 3., 4.) and while I would believe Option 4 could be implemented very rapidly and effectively, discussing Plex team, they know about it and it should be done eventually but they obviously had other priorities.

So if you're left like me with not liking any of the above mentioned options, I didn't particularly like this option because my heart goes to Plex but when you have spent overs $1000 in a sound system, I have a sixth option which serves as a temporary option in the meantime a definitive solution comes to the Plex builds:

- Download XBMC 13 (Gotham), October monthly build,
- Install Amber Skin (from this repo: https://github.com/pecinko/skin.amber/tree/master/media),

- Install PlexXBMC addon (from this repo: https://github.com/KodeStar/plugin.video.plexbmc/tree/section-endpoints)

Obvioulsy, for a Plex user, it took me an jour or so to getting used to XBMC's interface and configuration but once done, you get to benefit from the DTS to AC3 from XBMC with a interface that is close to PHT and accessing your actual Plex library

Been using it for a week and it's working great although, in my opinion, from a GUI point of view, Plex remains better!

*EDIT* Have just realized the OP was from me :D

DTS streams embedded within a vob are still a problem for me. This stems from getting around Cinavia by using MKV2VOB that patches the dts stream. However the resultant muxed file is not liked by Plex. I am waiting patiently, but I think it is of low priority. I am so lazy, I can't be bothered doing the xbmc route!!

+1 for transcode to 7.1ch EAC3

Well, eventually, the Plex team will merge all XBMC 13 Gotham changes into the Plex branch. As I said, should be a matter of months before they do and this will be ancient history!

I don't know though if 7.1ch EAC3 will be fixed but if you want to know, test it with XBMC 13's october built. You will know at least whether it will be fixed with Gotham's merge.

Considering how good the last PHT build is, I switched back to Plex. Not a XBMC guy after all, although their subtitle feature got me interested as well. I will live with DTS to upmixed stereo for a couple of months :)

I really wish they would fix this.

There used to be workarounds but it seems none work anymore, at least not that I have been able to get to work on my Mac mini.

While there’s no ETA, PHT devs have recently said great things are coming soon enough. But, expect something like in September in my opinion. Hopefully, the long awaited upgrade to newer KODI release will fix this!
