Hi at the moment Plex will transcode DTS to AAC only. I would like Plex to transcode DTS To AC3 because it is more superior than AAC. Plex transcoding to AAC lose the dynamics and fidelity to the surround sound: low background music volume and conversation not clear.
When I re-encoded the DTS audio manually to EAC3 it sounds much better.
Can the Plex team please make the audio transcoding of DTS to (E)AC3 the DEFAULT instead of AAC? This should be possible since Plex already transcodes TrueHD to EAC3 for my movies. If Plex already knows that my setup can play EAC3, why it still decodes DTS to AAC? I am really curious to know what is the technical reason here.
Maybe I should mention a bit more about my setup:
I have Plex running in a docker container on Synology DS-920+. The Sonos playbar is connected to the Samsung Tizen TV (2019) via optical and it supports Dolby Digital (DD+ only available via HDMI). The Sonos system is set up as surround with 1 sub mini and 2 Play One speakers as rear speakers.
So far Plex can direct play any media with AC3 and EAC3 without any issue. With DTS Plex will transcode it to AAC so not so ideal for me. To my surprise, TrueHD (7.1) and Dolby Atmos get transcoded to EAC3 and they sound so much better! So it must be possible to change the transcoding of DTS → EAC3.
Currently there is no passthrough option in the Samsung Tizen Plex client. Maybe it is easier to expose the passthrough option on Tizen this is also present on Android platform.
Upvote on this, lot of TV are not supporting DTS, would be very nice to have a proper conversion to better format than AAC or Opus.
Same for Dolby TrueHD it should be converted to EAC3 5.1
I have moved to Emby and Emby is transcoding everything to AC3 or EAC3. Emby will always direct play unless the media is not compatible! For all the movies that Plex would transcode they all now direct play in Emby! Nice!
I would suggest you guys move to Emby. Their forum is very responsive and the developers are actually very active in the forum! Way way better than Plex.
Emby is also much faster with transcoding and instant to start a movie!
