Force Plex to transcode DTS to EAC3 rather than AAC?

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, I couldn’t find an exact answer.

I have a number of videos which have DTS or DTS-MA soundtracks. The TV in question does not support any derivative of DTS. The TV does however support EAC3, AC3 and AAC natively (Samsung Q90R). PMS is at the latest public version, OS is Ubuntu 24.01 x64. Native Plex app on the TV.

When I play the videos in question, Plex transcodes the DTS soundtrack to AAC.

Is there a way I can force Plex to transcode to EAC3 instead of AAC?

Many Thanks

Just following up on this, oddly reinstalling the latest version of PMS in Docker now transcodes DTS to EAC3 without any changes on the same TV/App.

I guess there was a change in PMS build or the codecs got messed up somehow with previous updates.

Can you specify which version of PMS you are having (the one that transcodes DTS to AC3)?

Of course:

PMS: 1.20.1.3252 (the semi official docker build - https://github.com/plexinc/pms-docker)
Running on Ubuntu 20.04 x64 / Docker 19.03.12 if thats useful

I just installed it on my Synology DS214. It seems that my LG 60UH617T still outputs DTS rather than DD. Can you provide your specific settings for your PMS? Many thanks.

I’ve not changed anything in the Profiles that would cause a change tbh. The Samsung TV in question says “no” when Plex queries whether it can play DTS hence the re-encoding to EAC3.

What was weird for me is Plex always used to transcode from DTS to AAC but now it seems to transcode DTS to EAC3. Which is oddly what I always wanted. The only change I made was a fresh install using Docker instead of directly installed. Maybe there something in the semi-official Docker build that changes things but Plex Inc haven’t published what they could be unfortunately.

My LG TV is capable of decoding DTS. Maybe that’s why it just doesn’t transcode. When I uncheck DTS in Audio settings, the client simply says that the file is unplayable.

PMS: 1.20.1.3252 on DS918+
Client: Plex LG app 5.1.3, webOS 3.8.

LG B7 OLED <–HDMI-ARC–> Denon 4300H

When I disable dts in the Plex app and play a movie with a dts 5.1 audio track, Plex Media Server transcodes the audio to AAC 5.1. The LG converts AAC 5.1 to EAC3 5.1 then sends it to the Denon.

I thought the LG would send the audio as PCM 5.1. However, the Denon front panel display shows Dolby Digital Plus, not Multi-Channel In.

The Armada CPU in the DS214 does not have enough power to transcode video.

Make sure you are not inadvertently forcing a video transcode (enabling subtitles, etc).

That might be why the file will not play.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, the subtitle was the issue. Without subtitle, DTS was transcoded to AAC before being delivered to my LG TV, which then transcoded AAC to DD for Sonos. However the workload still seems a bit too much, since there is some buffering.
