DTS Transcoding... I think

Server Version#: Docker - 1.41.8.9834
Player Version#: Plex for LG - Client Version: 5.92.0 - Platform Version: 9.2.1

I have Plex Plus, the server has been stable for years, regularly updated.

Yesterday it worked to play Big Bang Theory, Season 11. Today it does not.

After much head bashing, I have determined that the files it no longer plays are all using DTS audio.

Attempting to play these files today results in a grey error screen saying “Playback Error” - “An unexpected playback problem occurred”.

This did not happen yesterday, but I have no idea what has changed. Nothing was (intentionally) updated on either the TV, or the server.

If I turn on the DTS setting in the audio (to tell Plex the TV supports DTS), the files will play, but either without sound, or failing over to a different audio type if it exists.

My instinct suggests it’s something to do with transcoding, so I messed with that for a bit and achieved nothing… TV has been restarted, app has been reinstalled, reset, and anything else I could think to do. Server has been restarted, docker container has been rebuilt.

The same files are playing back on the Web and Android clients, including transcoding. I do seem to be getting some audio skipping on the web client for the same files in original quality, but I don’t know if that is related or not. I don’t usually use the web client. When transcoded to a lower quality that issue went away too.

It’s almost certainly related to DTS, but I have no idea why.

Can anyone help me to understand what on earth is going on, and why it has changed??

Thanks!

i recently started having similar issues. files that used to play without an issue will refuse to play, unless i manually switch to “convert automatically” in the playback settings. otherwise it will just sit there with a spinning wheel and eventually the sound will start but no video. as far as what audio codecs are effected, it seems that problem only happens with EAC3 audio.

im running my server on an M1 Pro macbook pro. ive tried unticking “automatically scan for changes” ive increased the kern.watchfiles setting in terminal, and the only way i can get those files to play is by running them through the transcoder. direct play is a no go.
