Duplicate episode previews in "Recently Added TV"

Can anyone please explain why this happens in “Recently Added TV” at the server end (in the browser)? (it doesn’t seem to be happening at client).

There is only one copy of the episode on the server.

I have a suspicion that it is because these files are referenced by two different libraries. But it still doesn’t make sense to list every episode twice.

Is there a setting where I can turn this off please?

Server Version#: 1.22.2.4282

Back in the day (just a few months ago), there was an option in the advanced settings for a libraries to “Include in home” (I don’t remember the exact wording). That’s gone now. I think your only option now is to “Unpin” one of the libraries in Plex Web in the left hand side bar. I think that will remove the duplicates.

If you want to access the library that you have unpinned, you’ll have to click the “More” button, and then select it.

EDIT: It might be the option to include or exclude from global search, if my first suggestion doesn’t work.

I keep forgetting about the new options to mange libraries.

You can probably disable the option for Recently Added for Home and Users Home. That’s likely the best way to manage that now.

I have RA activated in both my TV Show Library Management(s) (new).
I have the old Agent and a new test library with the new agent with some shows I moved to it.

I’m not having duplicates… I don’t know why:

… one show doesn’t live in both libraries tho…
I actually moved a few shows to the new test library - so they have no reference in the old library - if that’s the reason…

I was just digging around in there actually and thinking it held promise, but then I realised it’s only for Pinned sources anyway. None of my libraries are pinned, and I am only viewing from within the “More” screen. Thank you though for your suggestions.

Hmmm… If they were in both libraries I would expect duplicates. Bug, dumb luck or a combination of both. You might see different results depending on a manually managed or automatically managed home page too. I don’t have any libraries with items that are included in another library, so I can’t say.

Yeah, in my case I have one folder where the files sit, and two different libraries update based on the contents of that folder (and others). So my suspicion is that if two libraries point to a single new file, then Plex is seeing it as added twice when it updates those libraries. Thank you for experimenting.

I might try adding a third library pointing to the one file to see what happens.

Well, I went to Automatic Management - to invent work-arounds as required (lol).

The only thing I can think of is that one library only contains the one show.
The one show doesn’t live in both libraries. It only lives in one.

You’ll have to remove a duplicating show from all but one library - is my guess.

The “More” view is apparently a different home page, so you will likely get the duplicates. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the inner workings of the different views can give you a better solution.

Right - I don’t view ‘More’.
All my stuff is pinned.
And a single show ONLY lives in one library.
I moved a few entire shows to the new test library - they have no reference in the old library.

Yep - sounds good to me…

I think the “More” page works the way the old home page from a few months ago worked. That is, it combines Recently Added libraries of similar types into a single row, not split up by library.

To clarify why I have multiple libraries pointing to the one file…
I have a TV New library (for brand new shows), plus a library of Current shows so that I don’t have to hunt for whatever I’m watching, and a Recent Docos library because there are so many of those I decided to separate them.

I do these things because I have a massive archive and I am always adding more content, which means that current episodes get buried.

I also have a TV Recent library for my users, which puts them all together in one long list for people who would prefer that. This is the “second” library we’ve been talking about which is pointing at the same files as all the others above.

Just did an experiment, added an extra library pointing to TV New and just downloaded a new episode. I now have triplicate previews under Recently Added TV - in both “…More” screen and Pinned (I had pinned all three libraries that point at the file). The screen shot below is from the Pinned screen.

So now we know that it’s definitely because of the multiple libraries pointing at the one file. That’s one question answered. My follow-on question would be - why?

'cause the show exists in both libraries?

I think you answered your own question with the first sentence.

That makes a lot of sense, and my experiments support this.

I have done another experiment to test the pinned options and see whether the customisation works for me. Making changes to “Manage recommendations” doesn’t seem to update the display of duplicates/triplicates on files that have already been added, which I would say is a bug.

Manage recommendations doesn’t seem to have helped upon adding a new file, either. What a weird issue. I can see why they changed the home page and split these things up.

I appreciate your help though, @leelynds and @JuiceWSA. At least now I understand the root cause of it so I can now nut out how to work around it. Knowing where to start was the key I was looking for.

Oh, sorry I should have clarified what I was asking why about. What I meant was why list the same file twice, even if it’s listed in multiple libraries? It’s pretty easy for the server to see that it’s only one new file.

Well, I was waiting for the opportunity to say:
Plex is really dumb.
I wouldn’t let it watch my kids while I went down to Slimy Eddie’s Bar and Grille…

Bahahaha!

In my use case, I have files in a library called TV Shows, but that library takes 15 minutes to scan. I have a second library called New TV, which I use for the newest shows, because it scans in seconds. Since the files in New TV are also included in TV Shows, I get duplicates because Plex sees the same file in two libraries. Seems like the pinned library HOME should collect all those libraries, and present this in shared view, with no duplicates. It should not matter that the files are are duplicates in both libraries, because all the libraries are available to the USER. I think this behavior is undesirable, or at the very least, should allow for some customization.
