DVD Rips using MakeMKV playing back at 29.97fps not 23.97fps

Server Version#: 1.24.3.5033
Player Version#:Latest Apple Device

So I have noticed that rips of all DVD using makemkv playback at the incorrect frame rate. It’s like plex is adding 2:3 pulldown as these DVD are encoded with 24fps with the flag that is needed. If I just take my DVD and throw it in my blu ray player it will play 24 fps.

These dvd do not have hard telecine. I would understand if they did not figure that out even know it would be nice if the plex player could detect hard telecine and reverse it.

Bluray rips are 23.97 and play correctly on the apple player.

I’ve seen complaints from others that the player doesn’t handle 2:3 pulldown well.

You’re best bet it’s to run it through tsMuxeR with “remove pulldown” checked. You can then use MkvToolnix to remux back to an mkv. It’s annoying, but it will give you a 23.976 file that will play back correctly.

I know there are workarounds but it is so stupid that the player can not get this correct. I will just put the DVD in most of the time but It just annoys me when I took the time to rip 100s of DVDs over the years. I feel like it used to work correctly but I might be wrong. The video is encoded at 23.97 fps all it has to do is send that to the player without the flag right. Or if plex transcode when playing back why can it not put out the correct framerate.

Even when looking at the file info in the plex web player it says 29 fps when it should read 23.

If the player is working correctly it should see the flag and if the display is not able to switch to 24fps then it does the pulldown and if the display like my projector is able to switch to 24 then it should output that.

Honestly the DVD standard is what’s stupid and outdated lol. All NTSC DVDs report the framerate as 29.97fps to the player as it’s required by the standard. It’s then up to the player to either deinterlace or handle the pulldown to playback properly.

Is it stuttering on playback or does it just look like it’s playing 23.976p at 29.97p? If it’s stuttering, then hopefully someone else comes along and explains why. If it’s just bring played back at 29.97p, then that might be how the player handles it.

Its very watchable no stuttering but its clear is not 24p like it should be, like end credit do not scroll smoothly like they should. and with my projector when starting a movie it normally goes black for a second and makes a sound and that’s when its popping into 24p from 60p that the display normally shows.

DVD may be old but plex is main job is to display ripped DVD and blu rays. It should be as good as a cheep disk player. Apple tv does a good job if you buy a movie from there iTunes my projector jumps into 24fps. and plex does it correct for blu ray. DVD are encoded with the same fps as blu ray they just have a stupid flag that plex is not handling correctly.

Come on plex you should be better then this.
