I see much the same behaviour in 1.8 as 1.7. It’s not all the time, of course. But often enough. I have an HDHomeRun Extend (well, 2).
I looked at a log for the most recent occurrence (this morning) before this thread started. I didn’t see anything too unusual, but of course, I’m a relatively new user. I had to restart Plex to get the tuner unlocked in DVR (the HDHR didn’t have it locked, but Plex did).
The situation in the log is that an earlier recording hung (Family Guy). That is it shows 100% complete and still recording, over an hour after the show ended. The excerpt is the attempted start of a later recording (Robocop)…

The latter show (Robocop) showed the expected error icon in the Web UI. Which of course, disappeared when I restarted Plex to clear a lock. No other information seemed available.

Having the same issues myself with 1.8 - though less often than 1.7.
cant the plex team go back to 1.6.1 recorder and use that since it worked cleanly and completly. I tried 1.8.1.4319 and recordings are still holding channels 50 minutes after show has ended and its still building the recoding (ie getting larger in the grab folder). 1.6.1 atleast it recorded and finished released the tuner within a minute of show ending and video was available for viewing. It appears that some sort of transcoding or merging of video blocks are still being built long after recording has ended , I have transcoding turned off so it should not be doing anything different then 1.6.1 did.
Guys this is not just me there are many users with same issue what did you change from 1.6.1 on that is screwing a lot of us with recording???
When 1.7.0 was released in preparation of offering Live TV the process for recording was changed from recording shows in one large file to recording short files, about 1 second in length I believe. When the recording is finished all of these small files have to be assembled into one file. It appears that the time required to resssemble these files must depend on the processing power of the server. My files are processed and passed to my post processing within a few minutes of the recording finishing. To allow this option would prevent Live TV on that system more than likely. I agree that I would rather have the ability within Plex to specify to not create these separate short files when recording. I personally do not plan on using Plex for Live TV. My entire house has RG6 cables to each room where a TV would be placed. If I can ever get the wife to agree to officially cut the cord I will split the cable running from my antenna, add an amplifier, and connect the antenna to the RG6 cabling to the rest of the house to get the antenna feed to each TV.
@johnm_ColaSC ,
well that explains part of the problem the chunking thats done for Live TV portion seems to be what is causing the issue, cause a 30 minute show is still “assembling” 1.5 hrs after recording should have stopped, strange part is Plex says there were 4 tuners recording on a 3 tuner HDHomeRunPrime box. A little off I think… Why don’t they just give us an option to do single file or chunked knowing that Live Tv could be an issue. Stupid part of it is I can play recording as they are being built now if i goto the grab folder and play a recording thats happening live until it hits the end of the “file”
