Plex DVR - Lots of Problems - help?

Hello,

Plex DVR is simply not working for me and wondering if anyone can shed some light. I have been trying for around 2 weeks and not having much luck. I think i have 2 episodes which have worked out of around 20.

Plex - 1.7.3.3937
WinTV-dualHD
Windows Server 2008 R2

Issues
Recording Shows Successful - actual Show no where to be seen (no deletion set on airings)
Recordings - 3- 5 minutes long on 30 mins programs (seems to think complete)
Recordings - duration shows anywhere from 3hrs to 8hrs but only seems to have recorded 10-15 mins and then stops
Program guide - doesnt show HD version of show (example sunday brunch on C4 and C4HD only shows C4 version)
Program guide - doesnt show all episodes (set to new airings only) but shows which i know are new not showing until i choose new & repeat airings

Having said this the live tv when used has seemed to work well.

Attached some logs

I am looking at the logs. I see two recordings started at these times

Jun 19, 2017 19:00:00.618 [5600] DEBUG - DVR:Grabber: Starting operation for 'Hollyoaks - Episode 06-19'.
. . .
Jun 19, 2017 21:00:00.654 [3448] DEBUG - DVR:Grabber: Starting operation for 'Love Island - E15 - Episode 15'.

Are these ones that went wrong?

Yes they were last nigths errors. These are the ones which showed 3 -7 hours duration but only recorded 10 mins ish each.

Have been looking at the logs and it appears that the transcoding stops - so we had recording of Hollyoaks 06-19 episode started at 19:00 and it finished at 19:30. But the transcoding of the incoming TV stream stopped at 19:13.

It could be that there is a device issue. A signal issue ?
Could you look into that aspect using WinTV tool http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/support/support_digital_signal_monitor.html

The next Plex Pass release will have some improvements to how the transcoder handles the live stream - and suggest you wait for that and see if it makes a difference - if the signal monitor does not show any issues. The transcoder may have stopped because data stopped coming in from the WinTV device

Thank you for looking, how come the transcoding in the first place, i have this setting to off Convert Video While Recording?

The signal monitor didnt want to run but i watched the affected channel via WinTV and no problem, i also recorded 3 hours using WinTV on channel4 and ITV2 with 2 at once and again no issues in quality or recording on playback. CPU\Memory usage both below 40%. I did notice they are .ts and much larger in size than what i was getting from the recordings from plex so i may have answered the first question myself.

Also last nights recordings both think successful but one was 19 mins and the other showed as 46mins but recorded around 8.

Thanks. Lets wait for the new Plex Pass release to be available and see what happens then and have a look at logs from the new version if the problems persist

There have been alot of posts about the later releases of plex and it transcoding recordings automatically without your request, in older version of plex eg 1.6.1 and lower it recorded and stored “ts” files which were raw files without transcoding with later releases it transcodes and re-packages your recordings into mkv files and alot of people have had issues with including me the original recordings were fine but something is happening when its building the mkv files they get corrupted and un-usable. I have downgraded to 1.6.1 and all is fine. Interestingly on one of my other plex servers that have more horse power the later release seems to work better but that server isn’t used much so it has plenty of spare cpu for the transcoding to happen and works 80-90% of the time.

We all hope that plex re-instates the “no transcoding” option and allows the ts vs mkv feature as a settable option.

I wont go back yet as i still have my dvr box in situ, but am more than happy with the larger file sizes of .ts, most stuff will be watched once and delete anyway. T

The machine is capable of transcoding a 2 1080p mkvs for chromecast and phone so i think it should be ok. I have found something strangle, HD recorfings seem to work ok. I did some pointless over the past few days and no problems. Hollyoaks worked last two as well but 9pm Love island has not worked once. I did log on whilst it was recording yesterday and no strain was on the CPU/mem around 40/50% for pointless and hollyoaks. When i jumped on just after 9 i actually had a windows error - Plex transcoder has stopped working. So that didnt work, i did check back through the logs and although this has happened a while back it hasnt showed up since i enabled DVR.

Ill wait for the next update and see how i fare - do we have any ideas on dates?

No firm date. But I expect it to be within the next 2 weeks

So ive had a couple of updates over the past week and still getting problems (were these the ones i was waiting for) Last night neither recorded anything and dont even show up on the schedule for yesterday, Logs point at transcoder error. Strangly i am recording PJ Masks which has seemed to recorded around 17 episodes ok over the past week. Wednesday i had the 100 to record and as normal that said succesful but nothing showed.

I am very confused to whats going on.

took a look at you logs and it is still having issues with your stream can you check you signal strength and quality as @sa2000 said http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/support/support_digital_signal_monitor.html should work, just I am seeing these in your log.

hmm, ok can you try curl http://127.0.0.1:32600/devices/compound_device041dvb%23bda%23usb%23vid_2040%26pid_0265%230013909199%23/media/triplet%3A%2F%2F9018%3A8204%3A8448?param=%3C%3Fxml%20version%3D%221%2E0%22%20encoding%3D%22UTF-8%22%3F%3E%0A%3Ctunedata%3E%3Ctt%3E4%3C%2Ftt%3E%3Cdq%3E0%3C%2Fdq%3E%3Cdr%2F%3E%3Cfr%3E489800%3C%2Ffr%3E%3Cmd%3E0%3C%2Fmd%3E%3Csr%3E0%3C%2Fsr%3E%3Cpl%3E0%3C%2Fpl%3E%3Clf%3E8%3C%2Flf%3E%3Cl1%3E0%3C%2Fl1%3E%3Cl2%3E0%3C%2Fl2%3E%3Cls%3E0%3C%2Fls%3E%3Cpp%3E0%3C%2Fpp%3E%3Chz%3E0%3C%2Fhz%3E%3Cin%3E0%3C%2Fin%3E%3Cfc%3E0%3C%2Ffc%3E%3Ct%3E8204%3C%2Ft%3E%3Cn%3E9018%3C%2Fn%3E%3Cs%3E8448%3C%2Fs%3E%3Cen%3E0%3C%2Fen%3E%3C%2Ftunedata%3E%0A -o test.ts leave it running for a while see if it stops. to manually stop press CTRL + C

I let it run for over an hour and the file played fine. Screenshot below, i dont believe its signal related. My youview (ran from same booster) always has 100% signal and never see issues on SD channels. On the odd ocasions (windy\rainy) the HD channels can be a little flakey but never bad enough to turn over.

Ok so after wondering why PJ Masks always seemed fine i tried changing hollyoaks and Love island to record on +1 and for 3 nights i have had successful recordings. Now i dont know if this is related but could the channel maps have anything to do with it (is it looking for HD)?

Although if i manually start a recording on these channels E4 / ITV2 they work ok and think i may have had 1\2 successful in the past .

Also i have Been trying south park on 5 Star. It always says successful but cannot be found, however i have just found them in my Recycle Bin… I have checked and can confirm “Keep = All Episodes” & “Delete after Watching = Never”

Any ideas?

Ive attached the logs to see if we can find why South Parks being deleted, I scanned the server and tuner and couldnt see anything obvious?

You have policy for the shows in the library. Separate from DVR recording settings.

Jul 07, 2017 00:00:08.857 [3836] DEBUG - Garbage Collector: Deleting expired unwatched content for South Park (policy: -7 before 2017-06-30)
Jul 07, 2017 00:00:08.857 [3836] DEBUG - Garbage Collector: Deleting episode 1 - Reverse Cowgirl (beyond window of 7 days old)

Plex uses Original Air Date, not recording date.

Thanks, Its strange as this is the first time i have south park. I restored from my recycle bin and looked on the show and couldnt see anyway to set it on show. But then when i re checked the schedule recording it showed 7 days, im sure this wasnt the case previous, i checked it numerous times.

One question i do have about original air date, is that original air date for that channel or first time it aired ever? For example i have just found an american show “The 100” in my recycle bin and i would have had keep for 30 days on that but had the same experiance as south park. Always said recorded but then never shown up.

First time it aired ever.

@trouty500 It is hoped that the wording will be changed to avoid the confusion

The Keep All Episodes or n Episodes should be used for old shows.
For new airings, you can use the Keep Episodes from the past n days setting

The documentation has been clarified https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/226074728-Setting-Up-Recordings

And referred to the development team to change the text and consider additional retention policies
