DVR Recordings Not Finishing

Setup: macOS Sierra 10.12.5; 27" late 2013 iMac Intel i5 Haswell 3.2 GHz; 8GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M with 1GB VRAM; plex version 1.7.2.3878

I have an issue where the DVR recordings don’t finish. When you click the “Recording Schedule” there are 11 items that when clicked say they are 100% complete, but the icon does not show the play icon to indicate that the recording was actually done. I go to ~/Library/Caches/PlexMediaServer/Transcode/Sessions and it appears all the recording cache is still there.

I can choose “Stop All Transcoding” from the plex title bar menu and some of the recordings actually complete and some don’t. The ones that don’t just get deleted. The ones that do show as complete (with play button) actually only recorded less than 100% of the episode (e.g. 11 seconds or 15 min of a 30 min episode). I will try to turn off the transcode as I record, but attached are my debug logs. This is reproducible with restarting the plex server.

Hmm; I think I’ve just run into something similar. I checked how mine was getting on with a couple of recordings this evening and found this:

From a quick look at the log file it looks like the transcoder for the first recording in the day was killed for some reason, but there’s nothing obvious that looks like an error message that would explain why.

I have the same issue. I just setup this a few days ago, and it has happened twice. If you want to free it up, but loose the recording, just end task on the plex transcoder. It can be a gamble as to which one it is, but it does free up the turner.

As far as i know its a bug and should be fixed in the next update

I’ve been having the same problem. I keep hoping with each update the problem gets fixed, but then it randomly reappears. I really wish they would fix this.

I have the same problem. I’m on Windows 10. There seems to be a Plex Transcoder for each of those recordings, and if I kill them, the recording files then magically appear and the button turn to “play”, but half the time the recordings turn out to not be complete.

A new release of Plex Server (at least for Windows systems, not sure about other platforms) hit today, and the errata states there is some DVR improvements…so let’s hope all of this is a thing of the past…

Hope so. Although I did have PMS crash after install. Schedule 6 recordings to see if that would work. After seeing them start at 6:30 I closed Browser and started working on other things. When I went back at 8-9 minutes later to see if they were still recording my local PMS was not found, only showed my Plex Cloud server. Checked taskbar and sure enough there was no PMS running. Started it back up and was able to get back in. Leaving it running to see if some other recordings scheduled for later run ok before deciding whether to revert back to prior release.

Yesterday’s patch did nothing to fix the issue. I’m on 1.8.0.4109 running on Windows 10 and it happened again this morning. One thing I noticed is it only seems to happen in the overnight hours which also happens to be the maintenance hours set under scheduled tasks. Has anyone else noticed if the timing of the lockups correspond with the maintenance hours set?

Well, try to slide the maintenance hours to some time where you are least likely to use Plex if possible…

With this new version of 1.8x, everything seems to be working for me, though this is just day 1…that never happened with 1.7x. Thank you (so far) Plex developers!

I do have transcoding off on the HDHomerun tuners…I think I’m going to try to see what happens with it back on…

I am still having the same issues of the never ending recording as pictured above with 1.8.x. My current solution is not great but better than constant crashes and not have a recording I can use. Here’s what I do: I created a script to quit PMS and all sub processes. Wait 15 seconds and start PMS again. This runs at 4AM, 11AM, 4PM and 11PM.

If people are seeing this, I’d very much like to see some logs at the time the recording is supposed to finish, and onwards. Specifically, it would be useful to know if the recording actually stops adding files to the .grab directory, or if more files are continually added to it.

Looks like I’m experiencing the same issue today when trying to record two shows at the same time. Even though one show has completed, the other show says it’s still recording, but in fact the tuner isn’t on.

I’m running Plex in Docker, so I’m not entirely sure there isn’t an issue there.

I’m having the same issue. Some of my recordings work fine, but some of them get hung up and never complete. @DaveBinM what logs would you like to see? (I’m a new at this)

I’m using a Mac Mini 2014 i5 8GB RAM
macOS Sierra 10.12.6
PMS 1.8.0.4109

Actually same question here. I’ve grabbed the log file zip from the “Help” tab in settings, but where do I post them?

same issues with hauppage win dual. win 10 i7 16gb ram. logs to follow

@bsmith120276 @nebhead
First of all, make sure you have DEBUG logging turned on, and VERBOSE logging off. When you see the issue occur, download the logs from the “help” tab in settings, and post them here.

Logs posted.

@nebhead When should the recording have finished?

Both shows were starting on August 9th at 8PM PST. America’s Got Talent failed and stopped recording at some point before 9PM, however the recording icon went happily on showing recording even past 10PM when it was supposed to be finished. The second recording, MasterChef, stopped at 9PM as expected and was processed normally.
