USB tuners is what the above comments are for, HDHR’s work great with Macs.
Oh. I had no idea HDHR operated over a network. That’s pretty slick.

I had the same issue where plex couldn’t find my Hauppauge Digital TV for Xbox One adapter and the web interface said I was using the current version (stuck at 1.5.5.xxx). I manually updated the server by downloading a fresh copy and installing and then it saw the tuner no problem.

A few things I might consider, in your shoes, would be:( A ) Use a Windows machine as a second Plex server that only handles your live TV
( B ) Migrate your Plex server to a Windows machine (yes, I know, doubtfully something you want to do)
( C ) Run a Windows VM in VirtualBox on your Macbook, and run a second Plex server on that Windows VM
( D ) Buy the ~$100 HomeRun Connect device from SiliconDust, which is compatible with MacOSOption C is certainly the most work, but might be the cheapest, and also the most rewarding if you’re like me and take satisfaction in making things that shouldn’t work, work.
Good luck.
Thanks very much for all these suggestions, I was a bit frustrated to find that the tuner isn’t supported with MacOs, but maybe its a blessing in disguise… Running Plex server off my laptop has always been a hassle, especially since as my library has expanded I now use an external SSD to store my media. SSD Drive connected to a laptop that is always moving around my house and not always turned on is not optimal at all.
I’ll take this opportunity to get a separate windows machine setup purely for my plex server. I’ll poke around the forums for suggestions, but anyone have a good recommendation for a "barebones’ (read: inexpensive) windows machine just for my server? (I wouldn’t even need a monitor I guess, I could just set it up and then keep it running.). I also migrated my media to Plex Cloud yesterday so I guess storage specs aren’t paramount which might save me some money on a windows machine.
Sorry I haven’t responded sooner. I’ve been doing a little studying, as I became curious myself what it would take to have a dedicated Plex server.
I’ve found there are a lot of refurbished desktops on Newegg for under $150. This page explains Plex’s hardware requirements. This desktop looks like a particularly good deal, running Win10 Pro with a gen2 i5 with a Passmark rating of 4914 and 4GB of RAM - should be easily able to transcode two 1080p streams simultaenously. It’s got the most Passmark points per dollar of the 15 cheapest ones on Newegg at the moment, and it’s even sweeter with the $20 rebate that is available today.
There’s probably not space to add in another HDD, but since you said you said you’re using the cloud you won’t need to bother swapping the 160GB drive out.
You’re going to be cutting it close on transcoding performance with that setup if using DVR on interlaced content with clients that can’t playback Mpeg2 and you want to keep things in 1080p.
That is not up to date. You need version 1.7.2.x for DVR/Live TV support.
This was it for me too. Despite the in browser settings saying my server version was up to date, it clearly was not. I was still in version 1.5.5.x. As soon as I manually updated, my Hauppauge stick was found immediately. Hopefully everything else is smooth sailing from here on out.
