DVR & Live TV - Tuner Happauge Digital TV tuner for Xbox One

After the announcement of Live TV and DVR, I saw that plex listed one of the supported TV tuners as

Happauge Digital TV Tuner for Xbox One
http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_xboxtv.html

I have one of these tuners lying around and I purchased plex premium to try this out. Instructions say the tuner has to be plugged via USB into the computer running my plex server… however I am plugging my tuner into my computer running plex and it is not detected at all. Is anyone else having problems using this particular Tuner?

My Plex server is running on a Macbook Pro laptop.

I don’t have that device, but the “System Requirements” tab on this page of the manufacturer’s website states it is only compatible with Windows machines (and Xbox), not Mac OS machines.

A few things I might consider, in your shoes, would be:

( A ) Use a Windows machine as a second Plex server that only handles your live TV
( B ) Migrate your Plex server to a Windows machine (yes, I know, doubtfully something you want to do)
( C ) Run a Windows VM in VirtualBox on your Macbook, and run a second Plex server on that Windows VM
( D ) Buy the ~$100 HomeRun Connect device from SiliconDust, which is compatible with MacOS

Option C is certainly the most work, but might be the cheapest, and also the most rewarding if you’re like me and take satisfaction in making things that shouldn’t work, work.

Good luck.

For what it’s worth, I have this device as well and my Linux OS picks it up fine. Still can’t get Plex to scan for a local device versus the network in the DVR setup though.

FYI, this link indicates that it is functionally the same as the 955Q, only branded differently.

Interesting. Based on the statement “Drivers are in media_tree and are included in kernel 4.1. They can be built for older kernels using media_build” on that page… I wonder if someone who knew what they were doing (that would not be me when it comes to Mac/Linux) could build a driver that would work for Mac OS, since it runs on a Linux kernel?

I have this one working but it’s on a Windows 10 machine. As stated above, I don’t believe that tuner is compatible with MacOS.

Correct, no USB tuners in America work with Mac today, because of the lack of a standard framework we can easily support.

As for Linux support, check out: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/support/linux.html

Which has instructions to a PPA w/ a kernel you can install which has the drivers already built.

That’s not entirely true. No USB tuners work with Plex on Mac today. There may be a lack of a standard framework…I wouldn’t really know, but El Gato’s EyeTV has supported a number of USB tuners on Macs for years now.

Elgato sold all that off to Geniatech, BTW, and getting support now is quite difficult. And yes, this is the only 3rd party app on Mac. Nobody else does, which is unfortunate. We’ve been actively trying to talk to the EyeTV folks and would be interested in including support for them, depending on the amount of work, but the lack of a standard framework means they had to add individual support for every single tuner, something we don’t have the resources for.

@MyaLover

Did you have to install anything other than just the Windows 10 drivers? I plugged the Xbox One dongle into my Windows 10 machine and installed the drivers from the Hauppauge support page. Now Windows can see it fine, but Plex can’t seem to find it. Thanks.

Same here
shows Hauppauge device but plex is not seeing it

actually i had to manually update to the latest plex version
version checker left me at 1.5.5.xxxx
as soon as i get the drivers for the xbox 1 tuner and upgraded the plex server it found the tuner
scanning now

@Capt-Kirk Hmm. I checked to make sure my version was up to-date (1.5.5.3634). I did do a reboot after installing the drivers for the tuner. Maybe it is a silly order of operations thing (e.g. plug in tuner after Windows and Plex starts up).

I did have some other software running previously and that may be the missing piece. I can’t remember what it was off the top of my head, but I’ll check it out when I get home.

That is not up to date. You need version 1.7.2.x for DVR/Live TV support. Make sure you have you system setup to check the Plex-Pass channel or simply download and manually update your server. Just make sure you use the latest Plex-Pass version of the server.

Carlo

@cayars Thanks. Yep, that was it. I honestly haven’t messed with the Plex Pass stuff before, so I didn’t even notice that I was only picking up the Public releases. After upgrading to 1.7.2.x, it saw the USB tuner immediately. Thanks again.

Glad you got it working!

Thanks very much for all these suggestions, I was a bit frustrated to find that the tuner isn’t supported with MacOs, but maybe its a blessing in disguise… Running Plex server off my laptop has always been a hassle, especially since as my library has expanded I now use an external SSD to store my media. SSD Drive connected to a laptop that is always moving around my house and not always turned on is not optimal at all.

I’ll take this opportunity to get a separate windows machine setup purely for my plex server. I’ll poke around the forums for suggestions, but anyone have a good recommendation for a "barebones’ (read: inexpensive) windows machine just for my server? (I wouldn’t even need a monitor I guess, I could just set it up and then keep it running.). I also migrated my media to Plex Cloud yesterday so I guess storage specs aren’t paramount which might save me some money on a windows machine.

I’m confused - the chart on the Supported DVR Devices and Antennas page says that all models of the SiliconDust HDHomeRun work with macOS.

What am I missing?

USB tuners is what the above comments are for, HDHR’s work great with Macs.
