DVR Recordings Not Finishing

For what it’s worth, I’ve got my transcode folder set, running on an SATA 6G SSD. I’m running Ubuntu Server with Plex in a docker container. It’s a pretty speedy system with 32GB of RAM, so I don’t think it has anything to do with IO performance.

One thing I’ve noted is that the failures have only happened with one particular channel (NBC affiliate in my area). Albeit, my sample size of errors is small, but it seems to be consistent. To me this points to a signal issue and/or transcoder sensitivity with that particular channel. Just a guess.

Seems like this issue is pretty popular - is there any way we can get it escalated with the Plex team?

Yeah it would be nice to, I don’t know, have a way to submit technical problems directly to the company we pay money for a product to instead of having to go to a message board where they take advantage of the community’s willingness to help each other out.

Hello,

I updated PMS yesterday and started getting the same issue. Rebooting the computer helped. I was also able to recover some recordings from the .grab folder.

I don’t think it’s related to HD speed, file size or channel. I recorded several things today, various channels to different hard drives… Case in point: I recorded 2 episodes of the same show today — the first one worked, the second one not (same channel, same resolution, same HD, about the same size). Only difference: the second one overlapped with another recording.

In all cases where it failed there was an overlap: 2 shows being recorded at the same time. But for some shows an overlap did not cause any issues, so something’s up with this version of PMS (never this issue up until last update). :’(

FYI in my set up I usually record overlapping shows on different HDs because of problems I used to have (old server would struggle when dealing with 2 recordings at a time, saving them to different HDs solved it).

Here are some details of the shows recorded today:

/Volumes/HD1/Films/Death on the Nile (1978)
4057 kbps, 480, 3:04:59, 3.2 WCAXDT2 (MVIES), 4 am (no overlap)

/Volumes/HD2/Chuggington
17700 kbps, 1080p, 0:47, 17.1 CIVMDT, 6:21 am (no overlap)

/Volumes/HD2/Séries/Super Wings
17200 kbps, 720p, 14:59, 2.1 CBFTDT (SRC), 7 am (no overlap)

/Volumes/HD2/Paf le chien
17200 kbps, 720p, 14:59, 2.1 CBFTDT (SRC), 8:45 am (no overlap)

/Volumes/HD3/Séries/Les iles de l Atlantique (2016)
17200 kbps, 720p, 12:30 pm, 2.1 CBFTDT (SRC), 29 min (no overlap)

/Volumes/HD1/Télé/Zone doc
17200 kbps, 720p, 1 pm, 2.1 CBFTDT (SRC), 90 min (with overlap)

/Volumes/HD2/First Men in the Moon (1964)
4063 kbps, 480p, 2:29:58, 1 pm (with overlap)

/Volumes/HD2/Films/Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
720p, NA, 2:00, 35.1 CFJPDT (V), 4:30pm, **Failed**: but 100% complete (with overlap + was able to recover .ts in .grab folder)

/Volumes/HD3/Séries/Les pingouins de Madagascar
NA, 720p, 6:00pm, 17.1 CIVMDT, 2:00, **Failed**: but 100% complete (with overlap)

/Volumes/HD2/Séries/En direct de l univers
NA, 720p, 6:30pm, 2.1 CBFTDT (SRC), 90 min, **Failed**: but 100% complete, (with overlap + was able to recover .ts in .grab folder)

/Volumes/HD3/Télé/Zone doc
NA, 720p, 9 pm, 2.1 CBFTDT (SRC), 60 min, **Failed**: but 100% complete, (with overlap)

Next two shows failed. Then I rebooted, after which the failed shows disappeared from my current list of recorded shows (they appeared stalled at 100% before reboot).

Here are my specs in case this could help:

    Plex Version 1.8.1.4139
    	iMac 7,1 (2007) running Mac OS 10.10.5
    	HD1 internal SATA 7200 rpm, HD2 USB2 Micronet, HD3 USB2 Seagate
HDHRCOnnect Model: HDHR4-2US, Device ID: 1048CD91, Firmware: 20170815

Finally found an installer for 1.7.5: I’m now running 1.7.5 and I no longer have problems with recording that won’t finish.

How can we report this as a bug?

The forums are the only mechanism that I’m aware of for bug reporting. You may eventually have reoccurrence on the 1.7.x releases. The last known release that was completely free of this issue was 1.6.1.

IS there a location for downloading previous versions of the server? I generally keep old copied but when i moved to a NAS i stopped getting the windows versions and now i would like an older windows version for the homerun DVR i have setup to just use it for live tv and I cannot find any working link to older versions… thanks

See my post here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/274585/issue-with-tuners-and-recordings/p3 for how to download prior versions.

please check out this thread and vote in the poll maybe this will get attention.

I can confirm I still have the problem with version 1.9.0.4252-d07c1f408 released on 9/7/17. A recording locked up about 6 hours after the upgrade.

Also still have the issue with 1.9.0.x. Failed 27 seconds into a single recording. Nothing else was being recorded at the time.

My findings are the same as lorddoskias. I’ve had to drop back to 1.6.1 to get a workable DVR service.

I now need to find out what I am losing because I am not running a later release now we are at 1.9.x. To assess whether it is worth it.

To be completely frank. It is not at all good that we have to run older versions of the service to get it working when the most advertised feature at this moment is the Live TV / DVR function. It is all over Twitter, emails (e.g. advertising availability on Fire TV), drawing more and more customers to purchase supported TV Tuner boxes, plex passes (if not already a subscription holder). Only to find it is not fit for purpose. IMHO Plex need to get a hold of the problem and stop advertising the DVR functionality until its stable in its latest releases, otherwise it risks a lot of unhappy new customers whose first experience is a very poor experience.

I agree with @“beastarman@gmail.com” . I personally signed up for Plex Pass for this specific feature. To this point I do not feel I have not gotten the promised value of the Plex Pass. For a period of time it seems @DaveBinM was working on the issue and collecting logs from various people. However, I haven’t heard from him in some time. Is there any progress being made on this issue? Or do we need to start asking for our money back?

I was/am also having this issue even with 1.9.0 upgrade. Out of frustration decided to fully delete (for windows 10) PLEX along with all meta data. Reboot and fully reinstall per https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201941078?mobile_site=true. After reinstalling 1.9.0., I rebooted and reloaded all libraries. So far, I recorded 6-8 items successfully. I will record for the next few days and let you all know if this truly fixed my problems.

**Update: still recording ok for Day 2, no problems after the reinstall.

@“slysmith@comcast.net” let me know if this continues to be stable for you. I would be willing to go this route if it makes things successfully record.

Just started having this issue last night. Previously it has recorded 20-30 shows and a few movies with no issues. I am running 1.8.4.4249

At first, I just tried restarting and it cleared everything up, but those shows that were stuck at 100% were now gone. This last time I noticed it there were quite a few instances of the Plex Transcoder running in my task manager. When I force stopped the one showing 0% CPU usage it stopped all of the active recordings but at the same time, it also finished processing the videos that were stuck so that’s good. Not sure whats going on with that but figured I mention it.

Anyways, will follow this post for a fix, but as of right now I guess I am going to need to cancel all of my recordings since none of them seem to be finishing at the moment :frowning:

Same feelings here. I’m on Plex Pass, checking how it works… But this is a major issue for me. Only reason why I use Plex is because it can set up DVR recordings (also bought a HDHR Connect specifically for that purpose).

I’m glad I didn’t go for lifetime and wonder how long it will take for Plex to issue a fix.

@domperignon3 if your using a homerun just downgrade to 1.6.1 and it will work fine for you

@nicksphone0161 - How does one switch versions without uninstalling and/or messing up existing setup?

@djcordel the plex configuration is all in you plex server data folder, you can simply uninstall the server software and then reinstall (if you have been performing updates through the server) from your server data folder \Plex Media Server\Updates

you will see a 1.6.1 folder click down through it and you will find the installer. Reinstall and everything will still be there in your plex setup.

@BRBMan Ok cool, I will have a look at that tonight. Thanks!
