EAC3 Atmos on Apple TV 4K does not appear to be passing through Atmos

Well, still waiting. How is it that the Infuse player is able to do this technically but Plex, with it’s clearly better resources, can’t? After all, Infuse is just playing what comes out of the Plex Server, right?

Integration, team.

Any updates on this? @DaveBinM

I really hope that EAC3 Atmos support is planned because it’s frustrating to see it available on other devices and Infuse doing it on AppleTV.

Just like transcoding using HEVC/H265 hardware…Crickets chirping!

This has aggravated me since I sold my Shield Pro and switched to Apple TV’s everywhere, I can honestly say, I have never been able to get Atmos to work through Plex, no matter what, but I can play the file with Windows 10 video player and Atmos works, I can use that Infuse on the ATV and it works, I can watch Netflix and all other steaming services on the ATV and any that say Atmos, will work, but not Plex, if the Shield Plex App can play these files and support Atmos, then why on Earth the Apple TV Plex App cant?

Tested on new Apple TV 4K 2022 and can’t play Atmos.

Any news about this?

This sucks. Apple TV is a great Plex experience, but this makes it nearly useless, if you can’t view your files as intended.

For everyone reading. There are two similar feature requests for the Apple TV that need to be upvoted like crazy to get the Plex team to take notice…. I guess. Coz’ this has now been a problem since at least 2019. So it doesn’t really seem like the team cares for us.

Infuse does give us Atmos, but the UX is not that great. I much prefer the Plex interface. So, please for the love of God, could the dev team piggyback of Infuse and fix this problem once and for all…?! Would be a nice Christmas present if you ask me.

Totally agree,

The Plex team need to realise that they have the potential to make the best aggregator of home media on the market. By supporting AppleTV it makes it really good for the less “AV” partners too, and means we all get the benefit of having something which works for everyone.

Please fix this though. A cinema setup needs something like Plex at its heart, but then some people have spent a reasonable sum on a setup which needs to be fed the highest quality…

Come on plex!

JSYK I reported this in May and now I see it is still not fixed. I mean… I wasn’t sure it would be fixed in a timely manner so I bought an Infuse year pass back then to enjoy ATMOS on our new audio system. Glad I did.

How come an important feature like this is not top priority? What I mean is having video and audio properly working. Having a new logo was more important…

So disappointing this is still an issue. Not only that, now there is no surround sound support on the iPhone with AirPod pros either.

At least if Plex could give us an explanation as to why this is apparently NOT a priority. What a freakin shame…

Maybe <> can update us on how important this issue is for the big boss who control this project?

Please stop pinging employees at random. Especially folks who aren’t involved in this thread. It’s still something we’re actively looking into, but I don’t have any ETAs or more information that I can share at this time.

Oh employees, you’re all paid? Then why don’t any of you is dedicated in keeping us updated on this? What I mean is like once a month or something.

Let me go back 1 year ago and quote you:

So we are now a year later with NO UPDATES FROM ANYONE and you come up with this:

Really? How come a year later there is no progress? It would be nice if you were more transparent and share some details with the community. Like have work begun to troubleshoot the issue? What is so problematic exactly? Maybe someone in the community have some knowledge and skills to help you with this issue?

Yes it’s free and MAYBE because of this I’m not entitled to cry every single month and that’s exactly why I was there in May to post for the first time about this issue then again a month ago and now I wanted an update so yeah I’ve tried to ping a few folks if they could find one person in the staff to chime in here and update us all on this particular issue. There you are, but sadly, you have nothing to say that shed light on the future of Plex for the coming year.

I’d ask you to review our Community Guidelines and refrain from ranting and attacking employees. This sort of attitude is not helpful.

Attacking? Please, it was a ping to find someone to update us all.
Whatever, Happy Holidays to everyone and see you in 2023.

Dude, don’t be that guy and ruin it for the rest of us. Maybe it’s because of messages like yours that the Plex team doesn’t want to provide updates in the forums.

So, I’ve recently bought the lifetime Plex pass, and got myself an Apple TV 4K and some Sonos Beam gen 2 plus sub and surrounds at the same time. After lots of trial and error (mostly error), I’ve figured out how to get Atmos on the Sonos (including a HDMI ARC/eARC extractor since my TV is ARC only, and a total change of all my HDMI cables circa 2010 to 18gbps (4K) and 48gbps (8K) rated cables).

Now everything that should out put as Atmos (via DD+) outputs correctly… except PLEX on the ATV 4K.

I thought I was doing something wrong, but after stepping in the forums here, it is plain as day that PLEX on the ATV is the issue, not the equipment. Disappointing to say the least, especially after finding this out a week RIGHT AFTER the PLEX pass purchase.

All is not lost though. As mentioned many time before by others, Infuse Pro works perfectly fine, but that means more $$ spent, which I’m sure many people have no wish to double dip.

For MacOs PLEX server users, I propose another alternative method, which is at no additional cost: The MacOS Apple TV App via Home Sharing. Just make sure to add the media to the Apple TV App on the serving MacOS device. The files MUST be in the MP4/ M4V (h.264 or H.265) format. The “Computer” app will play the files with Atmos just fine. The ATV app on MacOS doesn’t add any metadata though, so any meta data needs to be added via Subler (or similar app), which also doubles a a remuxer from say, MKV, to MP4/ M4V.

This is of course , a stopgap solution, and I hope that PLEX can get this sorted out… soon. Afterall, it has been about 1 and a 1/2 years since this issue was 1st raised!
