Shield 2019 Pro latest Beta
Plex Client und Server latest Beta
No matter what Dolby Digital content I play, it will be passed on as Dolby Digital+ to the receiver. It also happens with ARC. It also makes no difference between stereo and surround. If I play the videos with the Plex Kodi Addon, it is correctly passed on as AC3 to the receiver or TV.
I started watching a TV show with 1080p, 25fps and AC3 and have stuttering, dropouts and hangups. Everything works perfect with the Kodi Addon.
Could you head into the Android Settings on your SHIELD, then Device Preferences, Display and Sound, Advanced sound settings and disable Dolby audio processing? Whilst I can’t replicate the stutter you are experiencing, when I have Dolby audio processing enabled, AC3 will come out to my AVR as Dolby Digital+ instead of AC3.
Many thanks for the help. That solved my problem. Plex now correctly passes AC3 on to the receiver. The video is now also played back without any problems what I could test. I am not 100% sure but the Dolby Audio Processing setting is activated by default!?
Now the question still arises whether this is correct behavior. Is that because Plex can use the setting and can use it unlike Kodi?
In which case should you use this setting? What is it good for?
I found these two Reddit pages, but I can’t figure them out or don’t understand it because the setting supposedly convert DD+ to DD.
This is most likely because we rely on Android to do the passthrough via MediaCodec, Kodi is likely using a different way of implementing passthrough that avoids the processing that the SHIELD is doing.
Glad that solved your issue! I’ve informed NVIDIA about the issue, it could end up being improved in a future firmware update for the SHIELD.
