I have found many posts about this suddenly affecting users. I have already gone into the Plex settings to confirm passthrough is set to HDMI and then in the Shield Settings → Device Preferences → Display & Sound → Advanced Sound Settings → and DISABLED Dolby Audio Processing. Made no difference. I have tried plugged directly into my soundbar and also into the TV using soundbar via eARC.
AAC 5.1 surround did work at some point in the past year without messing with any settings. Today I noticed no sound coming from the rear speakers and checked audio playing was in fact PCM and definitely only coming out of the front speakers.
When I play the same movie in the Sony Android TV Plex app or LG TV Plex app, AAC 5.1 registers as Dolby audio on my soundbar and plays in surround sound as expected on all channels.
Everything I’ve read on the topic in reddit and plex forum so far indicates the “Dolby Audio Processing” setting was the trick for people suffering from this but this has made no change in my results. I even went a step further and disabled HDMI passthrough in plex settings for a moment, but that definitely didn’t do the trick either.
Is this some new bug of either the Shield OS or the Shield version of the Plex app? My Sony is Android TV as well and plays the AAC 5.1 as expected so I know it should be possible in Plex so I’m really scratching my head. Is there some forum post on this that I’ve missed and maybe there’s a solution available that I’m not seeing yet? Any insight is greatly appreciated!
