The home server part of this app is a power user app for home theatre enthusiasts. It’s users deserve to be respected as such.
For some reason Plex made the decision to restrict what metadata users have access to editing. One of the most notable omissions is Network for TV shows. There are others. There’s really no excuse why an app that lets you stream video across the world doesn’t have the same metadata editing ability that iTunes had in the 2000s.
If you’re concerned the options will confuse the user (this shouldn’t be a concern, people who run Plex servers aren’t the same people intimidated by too many options in apps), put them in a “More Metadata” tab in the editor.
Plex also choose not not show the network info on the TV detail screen.
The TV Network omission is a particularly annoying for two reasons:
- Pretty much all metadata sources prioritize American network. Even if a show originally aired in another country, often times it’s the American network that shows up. Beyond that outside of the United States, American shows often air on local networks. To make a Plex server useful to family members it’d be nice to have filters show the most useful info.
- Plex chooses to display TV studio over TV network. Unless you’re a Marvel fan, there’s little utility seeing what studio puts out a TV show. There is utility to users being able to quickly see what network a show aired on, so if they’re tying to find something someone recommended on a certain network, they can at a glance see if they’ve found the right show. I’m not suggesting removing studio, just adding network.
This metadata can be edited, because utilities like Plex Meta Manager can edit them. But we shouldn’t have to rely on a rather complex utility to edit basic metadata.
Please start prioritizing some of this low hanging fruit. Really no excuse this stuff isn’t already in the app.
