Enable HD Audio and full copy Sync for music above 320kbps such as 24 bit / 96 kHz or 16/44.1

I have updated the title as it seems all other mobile clients can transcode except for Android.

please add this. I would be able to use plex as my main source for music when in my car. My mobile data would be used up very quickly if I streamed at their original bitrate. I’d go as low as 64kbps. Please add this. Thank you

How did Windows devices get this before Android?

Damn good question.

@antoniolg @sixones @romancamelia @ā€œMovieFan.Plexā€ All due respect, this can’t be very hard to implement. Coming soon?

@kinoCharlino anyway we can get an official word on this? Back when we did the roundtables Plex was supposed to be all about communication…

+1 without feature remote music streaming is essentially non-usable for FLAC libraries given bandwidth requirements

+1 from here too - please add this ASAP!

Just updated to Plex 5.10 on Android and there’s now Settings → Quality → Music Quality. It doesn’t appear to be working as expected though. Setting quality to 96 kbps and playing a 230MB lossless file was still consuming hundreds of MBs. Tried turning off wifi and streaming over cell data, but made no difference.

Anyone else getting this?

Are you on beta releases?

I don’t think so.
Server v 1.7.1.3856
App v 5.10.1.264

Just got the update. Doesn’t seem to be working for me either, but didn’t have to test much yet.

I’m just now seeing this. I just got the new PMS installed so I’m going to do some testing. Even if it isn’t working yet this is great news!! It’s been over a year. Thanks for sticking with it all!

I think it is working but not in the why I expected. It seems to be transcoding everything regardless of the setting. I’ve played with the quality settings and nothing appeared to alter the stream quality. I’ve been testing for almost an hour now. I’ve been monitoring the data usage on the server side with nethog and altering the quality settings on the client seems to have little to no affect on data usage. The quality settings may not be dynamic and could require a client restart. IDK ATM

An hour’s worth of usage. The latter half being on ā€œOriginalā€ qualilty.

Everything I threw at it was direct played… was probably included early when they built the last version of the app with the adaptative bitrate for movies

It did work for me (one time). While testing, I would change the quality, restart the app, and my device. I had it set to 96kbps, and played a track - I heard a significant quality loss and the network monitor I was using reflected the low data consumption. But then clicking the next track in the album, it went back to original quality without me changing any settings. Have not been able to reproduce this again.

Just adding my voice to the requests for PLEX to add this feature. These requests go back quite a long way: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/173212/audio-stream-quality
As lossless audio formats like FLAC become more viable (cheaper storage and bandwidth) they are becoming more common.
It would be good to finally get it done (and working!).
Thanks.

Yeah streaming FLAC over 4G is extremely bad for my data cap. Not to mention I don’t have any visibility of knowing when a song is streaming in FLAC.

Update: no media type is transcoded, all audio limits are ignored. This is a big problem!
