Enable Proper Atmos Decoding Within MP4 Files

Hi team,

Per this post, it has been discovered that there is a way to implement Atmos/TrueHD audio inside of the MP4 container: Yusesope links a test file in his post, and using his test file on a HTPC with the tutorial he linked shows that his MP4 has proper TrueHD audio with Atmos support inside of the MP4.

When attempting to play this same file back in Plex, Plex simply states the connection to the server has been lost. Before I get that error, if I look at playback info, it says it is attempting to transcode the audio and says “Transcode reason: Codec (mlpa) not supported in Container (MP4)”

This same file works fine on a HTPC when using MPC and the Lavfilters. Per the discussion later in the thread, it seems Plex just has to add proper decoding for these files and then it will work.

If the Plex team can get this to work, then we would officially be able to have Dolby Vision files with TrueHD/Atmos audio. The significance of this cannot be overstated.

I would be up for testing and creating some of these files if Plex implements support…

This would be great!

Yep +1

I’m voting in as well

Please. +1

I’m voting for this feature as well.

Please make this happen Plex team.

I would say that this request is way more relevant now. Way better to get support directly from MKVs instead of Mp4 due to the further features in MKV
