Enable subtitle make stream unstable - hdd utilization gos up from 1% to 100%

Server Version#: 1.41.8.9834
Player Version#: LG WebOS 5.4.0
(checked for updates for both)

Local network all LAN connection

If i play this video:

The stream is not stable the cause is most likely the hdd is on its limits:
1751550509278

With this the stream interrupts often for a few seconds.

If i disable the Forced subtile (most of the film no subtitle displayed)

Everything works:

1751552030349

So why providing subtitle needs 130MB/s HDD? Is there a way to fix this?

The only time I’ve see this is when the file is encoded badly so your server is jumping around the file finding the parts it needs. Try remuxing the file as a test and see if that fixes the issue.

Thx for this hint, can you suggest a tool for easy remuxing 1:1?
Would it make sense to treat subtitles differently? Or use text base subtitles?

If you are using image-based subtitles (PGS, VOBSUB), ensure they are muxed-in.

If you for some reason you absolutely must use external ones, use SRT-formatted, text-based ones. If you can’t find one online, make it yourself: Introduction: convert image-based subtitles to SRT with Subtitle Edit

A standard tool to remux files is MKVtoolnixGUI.
There is a command-line version available as well, so you can incorporate it into your own scripts etc.

In my case the PGS subtitle is part of the mkv - soe they are muxed in. Mediainfo shows for “First text stream” “German, PGS”
Thanks for the hint to MKVToolnix - i will try to remux the mkv.

Remuxing with newest MKVTolnix didn’t helped. Result is exactly same.

By Remuxing i found that there are PGS and SRT subtitles available from the mkv. But with both: as soon as i activate subtitles (PSG or SRT) PlexTranscoder jumps in and HDD gos up to 100%. Since it is forced subtitle - most of the time no subtitle visible,

Is there anything i can do?

It might just be your Plex client. Many smart TV clients will enable transcoding as soon as anything but the very first audio and subtile streams are activated.
I wouldn’t expect a smart TV to cleanly play raw UHD Bluray rips. These devices are developed and tested with internet streaming services in mind. And these have much lower bitrates – even with 4K and HDR qualities.

so i should wait for fix of plex app for lg web os or use dlna or browser (not sure if this will work)?
in my case the german psg subtitle is first in list (in selection of client and in MKVToolnix).

The TV plays the video perfectly fine, the problem is that HDD can’t transcode fast enough (whatever needs to be transcoded). If i put the file onto a sdd it works - but this is not an option for me.

Thanks anyway - if you have further ideas i will try them.

I don’t think there will ever be a “fix”.
Use a pre-optimized file or switch to a different playback device.
Because if you continue to use such large files, either your clients or your server need to have the necessary horsepower to handle them.

what would be in my case “pre-optimize”. specifically for subtitles - without them it runs perfectly smooth - around 80Mbit/s. No problem for server nor client. I think 4k HDR should be not a problem in general (only because of subtitles?).

some say external sub title file (txt based) may be an option?

Definitely try them.
