Enable USb audio support on Pi2 Rasplex 0.5.1

Guys,

Love the Pi2 and rasplex, getting on very well with a lot of help from you guys, looks excellent and has passed the Wife test ( initial "what are you playing with now", and "how much did that cost", Me: "30 quid my dear") but all good now.

One of the main outstanding issues it 5.1 sound, i only have an optical connection to my Amp so need Toslink connection, a friend has lent me a USB card with optical, plugged it in but no options to select USB audio. I know I probably have to add some config lines or even software but not sure where to start.

Is this a achievable?.

Guys,

Is there anyway i can get optical support, a 3o quid solution could turn into hundreds of pounds if I have to buy an AV Amp and speakers.

The RasPlex team are working to support the HiFiBerry, hopefully it will be added in the release after 0.6.0.

Hi, I'm very insterested what the topic originally stated. I have pretty good USB soundcard, which should work under debian without much trouble. But I did not find any info how to enable another sound card in current RasPlex at all.

Does anyone know?

Thanks

This works well, http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IMGJ5D2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

Just requires hdmi.

Except I don't want that, I have good usb sound card that I want to use. For HDMI extractor one still needs good DAC and thats quite a problem.

Anyone has ideas? With 0.6.0 version ideally. Thanks

Would love to see USB Audio out!

If your Pi is connected to your TV via HDMI and your TV has an optical/coax output, connect your TV to your amp with an optical/coax lead and select TV as the source when using Rasplex. Bear in mind that not all TVs with optical/coax output support 5.1 sound. I know for a fact the Sony TVs since 2013 do support 5.1 sound on the optical output, Google for your TV or read the manual to check it is supported by your TV. I have used this method on one of my Rasplex units for the past two years.

the original question was to provide a TOSLink connection, so no is DAC required and this inline hdmi extractor will do that, including 5.1, your requirement for a DAC is a different need.

My USB card is *working* on OpenElec without any messing around, but in RasPlex its not available to select in the Audio options. SSH into linux and you see theres not even a module loaded for it, but lspci does show that the HW exists. There is obviously something missing from the Distro that RasPlex uses and I'm going to start porting things over from one to the other to get it to work. Or I could just save my time and stick with OpenElec/PleXBMC.

Current version of Rasplex does not use OE 5.0.8, next release does, so USB DAC may work, as we don't have any units to test with its a matter of wait and see.
