Endless documentary duplicates

While recording of duplicates has decreased a lot I still see a lot of documentaries recorded over and over and over. The match in the library is correct, Plex knows I have all the episodes, so why does it continue to record every single airing?

I don’t think I need ten copies of every episode. Yet here I see I’m currently scheduled to record more of the same. Is your sometimes fubar release date and periodic renaming of episodes/series affecting this? It’s ridiculous seeing terrabytes of duplicates.

Do you have any server logs for time of recording? If not, I can replicate your lineup/channel and do test recordings

When would you like logs generated? The next round of dupes isn’t set to start until the afternoon of the 11th.

Let me have a look at the EPG data - in case it is obvious

I need to know all the channels (channel number / name) that broadcast these episodes.

Is the lineup “Grande ClearSource Dallas Digital” ?

Logs could be now after a refresh of the guide as It will go through each and decide if it should schedule to record. And then logs after recording and post processing and matching - in case it is actually changing the episode number/season

Now that I inspect my schedule I see a lot of other dupes have crept in as well.

Dream Corp LLC, I have recorded this show entirely almost a dozen times. Now it’s airing again and I’m recording all the episodes again…

American Horror Story: Cult…I have recorded every ep, but looks like I’m going to record them all again.

The AHS issue reminds me of something else, “series title” being different from “season title”. American Horror Story is the series title, American Horror Story: Cult is a season title. It’s impossible to schedule “record all episodes” because your guide provider believes these are all different shows. I’ll make a thread about that, it’s a total hassle to have to be on the lookout for a slight change in the shows naming.

If the identification of the episode changes at the end of recording then next airing we will think we do not have it and record again. We are considering disabling the auto matching at end of recording to avoid such issues that would lead to multiple repeat recordings or worse - lost recordings

I need to investigate each of these to see why

The various documentaries could be on an assortment of channels. Grande is the correct lineup.

Of the documentaries you listed the filenames for - It is only Planet Earth The Blue Planet that has re-recorded again in January.

I am guessing we are mismatching at the end of recording

I can’t find channel 888 schedule for 4th January to establish what these recordings were for

All twelve episodes are indeed “Blue Planet.” I recorded almost the whole series twice last saturday it would appear.

The issue arises because we are changing the title of the show after recording and results in a mismatch when we check again for an airing

Ok. So this brings up the other issue I would like to be sorted out.

While “Naked and Afraid: Uncensored” is 100% it’s own show and should never be renamed to plain “Naked and Afraid”, all “American Horror Story” episodes are one single show. I don’t ever want my libraries polluted with individual seasons all broken out because each individual season has a subtitle like “Cult” or “1984” etc. I see this with a lot of shows whose seasons use sub title.

  • Aqua Teen Hunger force (from season 7 on every season is titled different)
  • Channel Zero (every season has a title like American Horror Story)
  • Survivorman and son (only called this for one single season)
  • American Horror Story (mentioned, every season has a title)
  • FLCL (season one sometimes called fooly cooly, seasons 2 & 3 have season titles)

I’m sure theres more than that, but those are the ones I remember already. This mismatching means it’s impossible to make a rule to record every episode as every season is a different show. I have no idea when the next season of any show will begin to air and then I’ll miss it if they change the seasons title. It’s quite frustrating.

I also would like Plex to realize “Africa (2003)” is “Planet Earth: Africa” just using one of the listed alternate names. I don’t like having 20 various planet earth series none of which I can actually read their title because "Planet Earth: " takes up all the UI space. If I remove the “Planet Earth” bit I would still appreciate Plex taking that into account.

Your release dates being fubar for three of those shows I don’t think helps either.

A separate library for anything with fubar guide metadata is unacceptable. Your metadata matching should be expanded to take into account alternate names for series.

I don’t know how you fix the complete junk dates your guide provider nonsensically generates, but taking alternative show titles into account should not be difficult.

I need specific information to follow this up. Channel number/name/airing times

I have setup your EPG on a PC and I can only see the first and the airings for episodes before Season 7

American Horror Story: Cult and other seasons, I am raising with our provider - but I need the actual data for the other series to be able to discuss them. This would need lineup (I already know this) and channel number, channel name and dates/times of airings

With regards to Planet Earth : Africa - the naming would have come from thetvdb matching - Africa (2013) - TheTVDB.com

Without tvdb matching, it would have remained as “Planet Earth: Africa”

Most of those shows aren’t airing right now. I will do my best to point them to attention when I notice them.

tvdb has all aliases for both examples. I prefer no “Planet Earth” in the title. I prefer one show called “Channel Zero” with four seasons and not for individual shows in my library. The same applies for American Horror Story.

Your provider needs to have show title and season title, if it’s different.

Then would come the request to actually have plex display the seasons title in the UI if you are on a season of a show with a sub title.
