Server Version#: 1.20.3.3437
Player Version#: 8.7.2.20952
So a couple updates ago I started having a problem. Sometimes I go to play the next episode of a show & it starts & I’m lost, I missed something. I go back & the previous episode, marked as watched, I haven’t seen yet. Now the 1st time I thought it was an error, maybe somehow it kept playing when the TV turned off (hard to imagine as the Harmony remote doesn’t connect to the Android TV device or Firestick when the TV is off). But it kept happening. Sometimes even 2 or 3 episodes Marked as watched when they weren’t.
This started happening about the same time the Up Next started getting screwy & after the last episode starts counting down to play the same episode again. After one incident I realized that I left for a couple hours with it sitting on that Up Next screen but when I got back I didn’t continue the show, but went back to start a different one. But after watching the new episode of a show that had just recorded I went back to the show I had been watching & it was 2 episodes ahead of where I was. So I started trying to not let it sit on that Up Next screen, & the problem seemed to happen less often. I’ve been waiting for an update to fix this problem, but there have been a couple & the problem still occurs. There has been a server update too, though I believe it’s the player not the server causing the problem.
I have the same problem on both the Firestick as well as the Android TV box that I use. I haven’t seen it on any others, but I generally don’t watch on my other devices, other people do.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Any ideas on what I could do?
Same bug, plex version: 1.20.3.3437-f1f08d65b
AndroidTV, Nvidia Shield Pro latest version.
After finishing episode 2, at the end, after waiting 10 seconds to go to episode 3, a new 10 seconds counter appears to watch episode 4, so plex skips an episode each time an episode ends.
I just did the latest server update, so I’ll let you know if I get the problem again, but I have already verified that I do still get the last episode up next after it plays issue
I’ve been noticing the same on my Firestick at least. It seems to think I’ve watched the next episode when I haven’t yet.
I managed to stop this by telling Plex “Use New Player = No” in settings, but then the old player on the Firestick keeps dropping the video about 3-4 times per episode, if not more (like it soft crashes back to the Plex library interface). New player doesn’t do that, but has the former issue.
Note my Shield (2017) hasn’t been having that issue with the old player, but then it is also on the same local network as my server (Firestick is not). I didn’t notice the next episode issue on the Shield with the new one, however I did notice it seemed to think every episode was paused indefinitely even after it finished playing.
Instead of adding new features to Plex most of us don’t really care about…they really need to fix these things that affect the core functionality of their product…
I’ve noticed this on my Shield Pro (2019) as well. Sometimes the episode directly after is being marked as played too. I’ve got the Trakt.tv sync plugin, and it’s clearly visible on Trakt.tv where the next episode is also in my watch history with only one minute in between.
While I see that can logically prevent the marking of episodes watched that aren’t, it creates, for me at least, a bigger problem. Thanks for the info though
The issue (or part of it) as far as I can tell (and this has been happening for a while) is that with auto play of the next episode enabled, the client (I believe, could be an issue on the server as well) notifies the server that the episode started playing already.
If you observer your servers dashboard when an episode ends and you are on the post play screen, you will see that the server shows the next episode started playing even though on the client you are still on the screen where it is counting down until the next episode auto starts.
Just my observation and I’ll admit, even though I see this issue every time I am watching a series, I have just been too lazy to get the required logs from my Shield TV and server and post anything.
For me this issue only started happening maybe a month ago. I never had the issue before that, & I leave my screen on that Up Next window a lot. It started when the interface got a major face-lift & changed up a lot. There have been a few updates since but the problem is still there.
Bumping as this is still an issue on the latest builds of both Plex and Plex Media Server, at least for both my Firestick 4K and my Shield (2017).
Play next is off, old player works fine (in this regard), and new player flags the next 1-2 episodes as watched about 20-30% of the time.
When it happens as well, right after the episode ends, Plex immediately reports the next episode either finished within 1 minute of the last, or that without playing anything, it is at about 98% complete of the next episode, if I check either the dash or Tautulli.
I honestly can’t believe Plex doesn’t care about this given this is such a core feature of their software…but I get the feeling that’s exactly what is happening here.
I didn’t check this myself because it was an unacceptable compromise for me, so thank you for that information. Hopefully all that information will be helpful
This same thing started happening to me like 2 weeks ago, it doesn’t matter if autoplay is on/off as it will mark the next episode as watched as soon as it reaches Up Next screen.
Meanwhile server shows that you are at the last minute of the next episode (paused) even tho you did not start it.
Both server and player are version 1.21.1.3876
Clients running on Android
Yes, happening to me today as well with the last minute of the next episode paused. This has been an on again off again problem with the android app for the past couple of years.
Just a note that I updated my Firestick 4K to Plex 8.12 and this is still an issue – Autoplay is off, and when it hits the Up Next screen Plex Dash shows the next episode as 98% finished and paused, which flags it as watched half the time.
Honestly can’t believe this hasn’t been addressed by this point. Even if it is the player, all Plex likely needs to do is change the up next screen.
Note old player removed in 8.12, so you also have no option to turn off “use new player” like you did in 8.11 to get around some of these bugs.
That’s been off on both of mine from day one. Still happens.
Also if you watch in the dash, once one finishes and the Plex UI comes up, it has the next episode jump to 98% played when it hasn’t even played for 1 second.
As a Plex Pass holder I’m extremely disappointed at this. I could care less about arcade games, but I want my media player to properly play media. Sadly that seems too much to ask.
