Error message saying Plex server not powerful enough to convert video

I’m a novice user. I have a combination of video music and photos stored on a WD EX2Ultra and have up until a few days ago been able to access all content on my windows pc, my iPad and a Fire TV. Now all of a sudden, only the TV works. I get a message on my pc saying the server isn’t powerful enough to convert the video and a message on my ipad saying that it couldn’t direct play, no direct play profile exists with an avi container and mpeg4 codec and it couldn’t transcode because there’s not enough CPU.

As I say, everything was fine a few days ago. Have updated to latest version.

Hoping someone can help as it literally gets used everyday.

First thing to try is restart the Plex server device and your router. If nothing has changed maybe something crashed on the router or server.

I am all of a sudden getting this same error and my videos will not play. Have stopped and restarted Plex but no luck.

Over the last month I have switched the nas drive off, wiped it clean and reloaded. I’ve even bought a bigger drive and added that all with no luck. The problem seemed random, not affecting every file. Given that the problem seemed to be with avi files I tried changing format. Tested it this morning. Tried to play a small avi video and got the same message that there wasn’t enough cpu. Redid it as a mkv file and it has played perfectly. Oh, mp4 seems to work as well. So just need to change format for majority of my home media! This never used to be a problem. Something must have changed in a system update at some point. Not ideal but at least I have an answer that I think works.

i found an update for Plex for Synology and updated and it resolved my issue.

Makes me think even more that this is a problem introduced as part of a previous update. Here’s hoping the same improvement is made for WD.

After readng all the threads on this and experiencing my issues, I 100% feel this was the result of an update. There was never any issues running any of my files and then none would play. After that last update, all are fine.
