"This server is not powerful enough to convert video"

Server Version#:
1.22.0.4163
Player Version#: web/ iOS/ any

I’d been doing fine with my WD EX II Ultra on OS3, ignoring the daily emails from it that there was an upgrade available… and I figured yesterday that probably enough time had passed to get a smooth upgrade to OS5 and the latest Plex version.

Wrong.

Immediately, the series that I was in the middle of no longer works. Almost every video in my library gives a message about the server not being powerful enough to convert video, including the episodes I watched earlier this week. That’s on my iPad app, on the web, my Amazon fire stick… they don’t work on anything.

I’ve tweaked every setting I can find to try to prevent it from trying to transcode video, and toggled half of them trying to find a sweet spot, but nothing seems to work:

Quality

  • Internet streaming
    – Video quality maximum
:ballot_box_with_check: Play smaller videos at original quality
  • Home Streaming
    :ballot_box_with_check: Use recommended settings

Player

  • Audio & Subtitles
    Normalise Multi-channel Audio
    Burn Subtitles Only image formats

Transcoder
:ballot_box_with_check: Disable video stream transcoding

Here’s something that won’t play, which has been transcoded using the same programme as just about everything in my library:

Media

  • Duration 1:51:34
  • Bitrate 6377 kbps
  • Width 720
  • Height 576
  • Aspect Ratio 1.78
  • Video Resolution 576p
  • Container MKV
  • Video Frame Rate PAL
  • Video Profile main

Part

  • Duration 1:51:34

  • File Sweeney Todd (2007).mkv

  • Size 4.97 GB

  • Container MKV

  • Video Profile main

  • Codec MPEG2VIDEO

  • Bitrate 5801 kbps

  • Language English

  • Anamorphic true

  • Bit Depth 8

  • Chroma Location left

  • Chroma Subsampling 4:2:0

  • Coded Height 576

  • Coded Width 720

  • Color Range tv

  • Frame Rate 25 fps

  • Height 576

  • Level 8

  • Pixel Aspect Ratio 64:45

  • Profile main

  • Ref Frames 1

  • Scan Type progressive

  • Width 720

  • Display Title 480p (MPEG2VIDEO)

  • Extended Display Title 480p (MPEG2VIDEO)

Not the same platform, but I’m getting the same error on an iMac 2017 (3.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 with 40GB RAM) on pretty much everything.

And it has plenty enough to convert the files currently in use.

And this is why I’m still running 1.19.4.2935…

If it were possible to downgrade, I guess that would be a solution…

Anything I need to tag to get this seen by support staff, maybe get an answer?

hello there, I recently updated my server. I have a GTX 1080 ti, an intel i7 7700k, and 32 gb system ram. I am running plex on a NVME 1.2 ssd, the data is on a SATA 7200 rpm HDD which reads as good according to crystal disk. both drives have at least 50 gb free to prevent lack of temp storage issues.
all videos on my server which are mkv container are not playing. all videos except a small portion are MKV container. the videos are MKV with h265 NVENC codec for video and a variety of audio streams, including DTS, flac, aac, etc.
the mp4 videos work fine, those videos are downloads of youtube series, all others are personal rips of discs. I would rather not have to run them all through ffmpeg to convert to mp4, because I have 400 movies and 40 tv series - each with at least 25 episodes (including 4 series with 10 25 episode seasons).
video playback works through the plex desktop app, however, does not work through any browser (opera, firefox, chrome, edge all tested), it also does not work via appletv or nvidia shield.
if this issue with mkv containers could be resolved, that would be nice. if it cant, can someone send me an older version of plex where mkvs were still supported?

I had been running fine on WD EX2U OS3 and recently upgraded to OS5. After reinstall things were running good. Then this morning, my ISP upgraded speed from 50 mbps or so to 500 mbps. Now, on Win10 Edge browser I get the “This server is not powerful enough to convert video” message. However, it plays fine on SmarTV. Weird, but messed up. I have read what I can find and tweeked settings…to no avail. Can someone in tech support reach out with resolution?
