Error while decoding stream #0:1: No space left on device

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6442 (64-bit)
Player Version#: Multiple players

Plex server is running on Windows in a ESXI VM.
I have several movies that are ripped bit-for-bit from the Blu-Ray, so very large file size. Recently, most of them have stopped working properly and buffer continuously after a random period of time, usually 1 to 2 minutes. All players (Shield, Web, Android Phone app) freeze at exactly the same moment in the film.

Then this occurs, the following shows up in the logs repeatedly:

Dec 03, 2022 13:15:51.004 ERROR [Req#1eda5/Transcode/dc30344ccd5adf9c-com-plexapp-android/7a4faee2-60ac-4ac0-959b-c237bc2a86c5] Error while decoding stream #0:1: No space left on device

The VM has 181GB free on it though.

What I have tried so far:

  • Cleared cache
  • Redownloaded the Codecs
  • Moved the Transcode folder to a different part of the hard drive.
  • Created second HDD in the VM, assigned it as Drive D and moved Transcode folder to there.

Movies that have been ripped and compressed play fine.

Has anyone come across this before? Has worked fine in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

Where are your Windows’s temp folders? Check the space for those.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

The temp folders were in the AppData on the same drive that has 180GB free.
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp

I just tried moving them to simply C:\temp, same issue.

I’ve realised that the ‘no space’ error is actually happening on all transcoding movies looking at the logs, not just the high bit rate ones, it’s just that the high bit rate one pauses the movie.

Out of desperation I just rolled back to the first 64-bit client as I still had it downloaded from when I switched from the 32bit version to 64bit. That’s resolved the issue, everything playing as normal again with Version 1.29.0.6219, no ‘no space’ errors in the log.

Unfortunately I don’t have a version between this one and the current version to see which version breaks my transcoding.

When i get time, i’ll duplicate my VM as a test and upgrade it to the latest version again.

In the meantime, any suggestions? Is anyone able to confirm this is an issue with the latest version of Plex? Or was something else just messed up on my install?

Many thanks!
Ian Biggar

I don’t see this with the current release, although I’m not running a vm.
