Error with named : "no valid signature found"

Server Version#: 4.74.2

Hello.

I contact you because I have a persistent error with my Plex server installed on a Debian 11.

In the syslog I have the following error:

  • Feb 15 13:49:26 ns332748 named[351451]: validating plex.tv/SOA: no valid signature found
  • Feb 15 13:49:26 ns332748 named[351451]: validating plex.tv/A: no valid signature found
  • Feb 15 13:49:26 ns332748 named[351451]: validating plex.tv/NSEC: no valid signature found

I searched on the internet how to solve this error, but I can’t find any answer to my problem.

Would you know how to solve this problem?

This isn’t related to your local Plex Media Server installation, at least not directly. I’m pretty sure this is your local DNS server complaining that plex.tv isn’t validating via DNSSEC.

So:

  • Are you running a local DNS server using BIND (named)?
  • Do you have it configured to always use DNSSEC validation (“dnssec-validation yes” in named.conf)?

  • It is configured to use Cloudflare DNS. On my named.conf, dnssec-validation is auto.

I can pass dnssec-validation to yes to see if that solves my problem.

Setting this to “yes” is actually more strict, so I’m not sure if that will help; you can certainly try it though.

What is the problem you’re seeing? It may not even be related to this. You can obviously browse the forums, which are on a *.plex.tv host.

Also, what do you see when you run the following?
delv plex.tv A
delv plex.tv SOA
delv plex.tv NSEC

You can query different DNS servers in the same way as dig by including an @1.1.1.1, for example.

On my own system they all return the “no valid signature found” result.

With the delv commands, I have the same result as you.

  • validating plex.tv/A: no valid signature found
  • validating plex.tv/SOA: no valid signature found
  • validating plex.tv/NSEC: no valid signature found

With the dig commands, I did get a resolution using Cloudflare.

So everything is normal then. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to respond to my request.

I’m getting the same error in my system logs (/var/log/syslog)
System is Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
I am using BIND as DNS for the local network because I won’t tolerate adverts delivered via DNS.

Feb 17 14:05:28  named[894]: validating forums.plex.tv/CNAME: no valid signature found
Feb 17 14:05:46  named[894]: validating plex.tv/A: no valid signature found
Feb 17 14:05:48  named[894]: validating pubsub.plex.tv/CNAME: no valid signature found
Feb 17 14:05:48  named[894]: validating pubsub.plex.tv/CNAME: no valid signature found

This goes on whenever the plex process might need to access DNS. but there’s no need to spam this thread with it.
There are no similar warnings for other domains, so the problem is specific to the plex.tv domain.
As an experiment, I’ve put an end to the errors by disabling DNSSEC in the BIND config files and it does stop the errors.

This leads me to wonder if Plex itself has their DNS set up properly.

How are you reproducing that with the command line and which DNS server IPs please ?

I checked with Operations.

Plex uses Cloudflare for the DNS but registration is with a different registrar for the DNSSEC.
They have moving the registrar on their radar.

It’s a renewal timing issue.

It will get all put together but not instantly

That snippet is copied/pasted from the system log /var/log/syslog. Many processes on a Linux system dump errors and such there.

You can follow it in real time by logging into the machine and typing " tail -f /var/log/syslog", which will show you the file as it’s being written. This is for Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS; other distros may vary. You may also need root privileges depending upon the permissions on the file.

As far as which DNS servers, I operate my own DNS server on that machine. Most ISP DNS servers and the freebies use the DNS protocol to deliver advertising. If you fat finger a URL, you should get page/site not found, but instead you get a list of “search suggestions” which are really paid advertising. I will not put up with that. So about 10 years ago, I set up BIND on my Linux router/firewall/etc. machine to avoid it. This is not a forwarding setup, it’s a fully functional DNS server, configured to listen to requests on the inside interface only (my network)

All machines on the inside network use this machine for DNS. Therefore, any time any machine on the local network needs a plex.tv IP address, even for just a web browser, it will generate those errors.

You can test using delv; it works a lot like dig. For example:
delv @1.1.1.1 plex.tv SOA

You can specific different record types: A, NSEC, SOA, etc…

It seems to have full conntrack table, if u see:

nf_conntrack: table full, dropping packet

in your /var/log/kern.log

You can check that with:

cat /proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_count

to see current count

and with

cat /proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_max

you can check max value.

If that is your case, you can increase larger value for nf_conntrack for example:

echo 524277 > /proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_max

and you must make that on your /etc/sysctl.conf file by adding:

net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_max = 524277

Thanks for your feedback.

I looked at the nf_conntrack_max value, this one is at 65536.
The nf_conntrack_count value is 72.

So, for the moment, I leave the current parameters.
I’m keeping this on watch.

If you want to disable DNSSEC validation, you can do that in named.conf with adding:

    dnssec-enable no;
    dnssec-validation no;
    dnssec-lookaside no;

in

options {

section on your bind and restart it.
