Errror: "A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server."

I did have Plex setup and working fine on my Windows 10 Pro machine, I set it up last month and have been using it with Xbox One and the Android app, last week I added some new videos and found it wasn’t updating them with descriptions and artwork, manually matching didn’t work either - no search results were found.

So, I tried re-installing, and then found I couldn’t add libraries at all. The language drop down box was unpopulated and so there was no way of selecting one, and it “could not save changes”.

This morning I again tried a re-install, but this time I deleted all the leftover files manually, and deleted the “Plex” listing from the registry, and so this time it opens up the browser, and eventually displays “A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server.”.

I have scanned my system with SpyBot and Windows Defender to check for malware, I tried temporarily disabling Windows Firewall in case it was conflicting, but I am at a loss and out of ideas. The only system changes I can think of between when it was working last month and now are that a Windows seasonal update was applied.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you ever try to download a new installer .exe for Plex? These sometimes become corrupt in the process of downloading.
Use a different web browser to download it.

Do a clean uninstall.
All you need to do is:

  • Stop/quit/end Plex Server with the tray icon
  • deinstall Plex Server with the regular ‘Apps’ control panel of Windows (do not use 3rd party ‘Uninstaller’ software like Revo etc.)
  • for safety, reboot Windows
  • download the installation exe of the newer version and install it

Going forward, I recommend to add the Plex data folder to the exception list of your anti virus software.

Thank you, I have already done all those steps but to no avail.

I went through the entire process using Edge instead of Chrome but to no avail, and I also tried using an older version of Plex (the build I downloaded originally, in case it was a Plex update that caused the problem).

Forget Edge, it doesn’t work with Plex. Chrome is fine.

Download a fresh copy of the current Plex installer (from the plex website, not from someplace else)

Do also download this and install it before attempting to install Plex:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=48145
(when asked, pick the ‘x86’)
If this installation fails, go into the Apps control panel and uninstall all instances of
‘Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable x86’
If this fails as well, use the Microsoft Fix-It! software to forcefully remove it.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

Then reboot your Windows “thoroughly” with shutdown.exe /g /t 0 in a CMD.exe window.

Thank you for your help, followed your steps, same error as before though.

“Fetch log files manually”

Plex Logs 2.zip (6.0 MB)

See attached

How full is your drive C: ?
What kind of drive is D:?

Was there a reason why you put the plex server program files onto D: ?
If it was due to space constraints on C:, it won’t help much, because all of plex’s data are still on C:

What kind of anti virus/anti spyware and similar software do you have installed?
Any VPNs perhaps?

C:\ is an SSD with my Windows installation
D:\ is a drive I use to install programs to, and yes, when it it was working I’d set Plex to use a folder on D:\ for it’s data storage too.

Both are less than 75% full (at least 10gb free on each)

I do not have any installed anti-virus software (other than Windows Defender), and I don’t use VPNs. I do do anti-virus scans periodically, but I use portable ant-virus software.

In the logs I can only see that there is major trouble when plex wants to contact its subsystems per the internal network.

Please try installing plex server back onto C: (it is only 156MB)
If that works suddenly, we have a valuable clue where to look for the bug.

I’ve tried that before, and I’ve just tried it again now to be doubly sure, but still no joy!

@OttoKerner asked to have a look at the logs

I can see that requests from the python processes are not reaching the server process

Could you get me the following info

Start / Run / cmd and right click and select Run As Administrator and then execute this command

netstat -a -b > "%LocalAppData%\netstat_2018-Jul-02a.txt"

and zip and attach the file

Also have a look at Control Panel / Internet options / Connections / LAN Settings / and see if the Proxy Server box is ticked

netstat_2018-Jul-02a.zip (2.7 KB)

I can’t access LAN Settings, says it is managed by my system administrator - but this is no different to when I had a working installation.

Is this your personal PC or a company device?
If it is your personal device, did you lock it down with Group Policies?

It’s my personal PC - I genuinely can not remember why or if I set group policies, but regardless it’s not changed since before I ever used Plex, and as such before I know it’s worked without error, so I don’t believe it’s related.

/Netstat looks ok

It might not be related but how can you say it has not changed if you do not have access rights to allow you to see what it is set to ?

We have evidence to show that a request from a plexscripthost.exe process to 127.0.0.1 to port 32400 being blocked or just not reaching the Plex Media Server.exe process which is listening for on 32400.

Other possibility is firewall and I am sorry but I have not read all the posts - what you could try is to add an inbound port rule in the firewall to allow all for

  • protocol tcp
  • local port 32400
  • remote port any
  • remote IP any
  • programs any
And check you are on private profile and have the rule applied to that

I have reached a resolution!

I saw your point, so I reset ALL group policies and the LAN settings were still greyed out, so I tweaked registry settings to enable it, but still no joy, so I manually created and set the Proxy server settings to disabled - but still no joy, except there was one setting that already existed but suspiciously in lower case where it should be formatted correctly.

So I updated and ran all my anti-virus and anti-malware once again and this time Malwarebytes found “Hijack.AutoConfigURL.PrxySvrRST”.

Removed it and now all is well!

Thank you for your help sa2000 and OttoKerner, much appreciated!

Have similar issue but not founding any malware and have uninstall all Microsoft C++ and still get this error and can’t add libraries. Here is my logs Plex Media Server Logs_2018-07-06_10-54-36.zip (63.6 KB)

The investigation would be the same. Again we have requests to localhost on port 32400 not reaching the server

Repeating what I asked for before

Could you get me the following info

Start / Run / cmd and right click and select Run As Administrator and then execute this command

netstat -a -b > "%LocalAppData%\netstat_2018-Jul-07a.txt"

and zip and attach the file

Also have a look at Control Panel / Internet options / Connections / LAN Settings / and see if the Proxy Server box is ticked

Could also check the hosts file to see if there are any intercepts for localhost / 127.0.0.1 there

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Sorry I was have other errors with windows too so I just didn’t a fresh install of window and re install PMS and all is good now.
