That is usually a class C network. Which means the first 3 octets must be identical, for two adresses to be considered in the same network.
e.g. 192.168.0.3 and 192.168.0.15 are in the same network
but 192.168.0.3 and 192.168.2.23 are not in the same network
Good point - just checked and the server and the other client devices all have the same ip address except for the final digits.
Then I’m almost out of ideas.
Could you install plex server (as a test) onto your host OS? Then we’d at least knew if it has to do with the networking of the VM.
what do you mean by the host OS?
i.e. not into a VM. Unless you are on ESXi or a similar ‘bare-metal’ hypervisor.
ok - good suggestion. will give it a go and report back. Thanks
installed plex on another device and created a new server works fine.
So a conflict of some sort is effecting plex on the VM. Given that was created specifically to handle plex as a dedicated machine is there anything else I can do to diagnose the problem. Any logs I should check out?
Used to rate plex quite highly but am close to junking it now.
no change and plex remains unreliable. Any final logs I should check out ? Or would it be better starting from scratch? Such a shame because when it works well Plex is excellent.
Just scrap the VM. Virtualisation just for the sake of it only adds needless complexity to the setup. It creates hurdles you have to jump which are not there when running natively.
As a matter of fact I thought I’d try that. I’ve picked up a basic second-hand pc and migrated everything over to that a few days ago. Closed down the system running on the old VM. But it runs in the same limited manner. So annoying. Whatever is at fault - maybe in the appdata or registry files - must have been carried over. This is why I wonder if anything could be pinned down by checking the logs. But that’s beyond my expertise.
I can take a look at your log files.
- make sure you have ‘debug logging’ (and only that!) activated.
- restart your server
- wait 3 minutes
- play one movie for ~ 1 minute
- wait another 2 minutes
- fetch logs and post them
thanks - will post something in the next day or so
Hi,
booted everything up today and a few changes. At the moment (fingers crossed) the indirect issuse has gone away. Maybe now the server migration away from the VM to a standalone PC has bedded in and introduced a solution. So for the first time in months the server shows up within the network as nearby.
As before I have the server on a pc in another part of the house and use chromecast and the iphone plex app to stream it to my tv. or projector. However I now find that anything I play buffers continually. The log I attach relates to streaming of a film in this manner.
Plex Media Server Logs_2018-08-10_20-13-57.zip (2.5 MB)
After restarting the server and waiting three minutes I pressed play. The film took a while to actually start ( a new issue) around 45 seconds in fact. I played it for one minute. It started buffering/stuttering after 35 seconds or so. The log was produced two minutes later.
