Estimate how powerfull is hardware decoding (Hardware-Accelerated)

Hi !

I currently have a PMS with Intel Xeon E5-1620v2 (9502 passmark) and I’m starting to think about a new CPU.
I want to know how powerfull is hardware encoding comparing to a non-Intel® Quick Sync Video cpu : if we can give number about how good it is, like passmark score.

The passmark score for Intel Core i7-6700K is 11111 (that’s not worth the upgrade considering the cost for me) but it also support Intel® Quick Sync Video and so the transcoding power can be much higher than expected (passmark 11111) ?
Or the passmark score already include that hardware decoding power ?

Thanks

No, the Passmark score doesn’t take the GPU into account at all. So the speed boost from Intel Quicksync goes on top of it.
I cannot provide you with definitve numbers though, how much it’ll be improved.

Thanks or your answer ! Any way to find charts or something to compare how good is QuickSync approximately ?

No, sorry.

No way to know as far as I know, but if I were you I’d go higher to Kaby lake CPUs (perhaps cut back to 7600 or 7500 like I did). HW support for 10bit HEVC makes a huge difference for sure.

Thanks good to know !
Kaby lake CPUs are more expensive than Xeon when on dedicated servers for what I have found.

Not sure what you compared, but with the GPU transcoding an i5-7500 can probably replace most dual xeon setups (of comparable core count/speed)…
