Exclude folder from sharing

Is there a way to exclude a specific folder from sharing on the server w/o having to manually tick off every other folder you want to share?

Thanks

Sharing is not folder based, but Library based.

To exclude certain items, use Labels

Yea, I just chose the wrong word. I have a library that is comprised of files for an IRB project. Because it’s IRB approved research, I cannot share those files publically but rather only to members of my research team.

I have some 30 people I share my server with and 35 libraries. I don’t want to have to go through and manually select 34 libraries, 30 times. It’s tedious. I was hoping to have a way to just restrict this library in a way that I had to manually select it when I want to share it.

No idea what that is, but guess it’s classified somehow?

Can be scripted, but still await for somebody to do it

Are you a Dev?

I think this feature request might serve your needs. You would edit just the IRB library and select the users who are authorized.

IRB projects are research projects. In order to get approvals you have to meet certain criteria. One of those criteria involve the making certain accommodations regarding protecting the privacy of anyone whom you interview and maintaining confidentiality during the research process. My project is a documentary so all of my interviews are video and so i have to maintain that confidentiality and can only share the work with my other researchers at this time.

I am not a developer.

So what I’m seeing is that there is no way currently to do what I’m asking?

Well, there’s not a designed way, but ther is a way, using some of the info on the page that dane22 linked, but it’s sort of a workaround. It’s probably somewhat better than the one-by-one steps you mentioned, but not very intuitive. Let me see if I can find the thread that lays it out.

Update: Well, I can’t find the thread right now, but the more I think about it, the method I referred to isn’t much less tedious than what you mentioned. It’s basically this:

  1. Add Sharing Labels to every item in the library (tag items that are public as “public”).
  2. Edit each user that is not authorized for IRB stuff and restrict them to the “public” label.

Whenever you add new media for public consumption, you’ll have to add that label.

@dane22 is right, though, you should probably find a better way to keep the confidential stuff separate.

NOTE:

Comments below is not Plex, but my personal opinion

Sorry, but:

I have no doubt about Plex security, but OS security is another matter!!!, but when said, a Q for you…

If you are dealing with confidential data, then why on earth are you exposing your box to the internet?

If you had been an EU Citizen, you would have been a target of GDPR here, and as such, most likely been fined!

Mixing private stuff and professional stuff is a NO-GO

Please use one box for work, and one box for private stuff!

It’s social/behavioral research for a school project (i’m a masters student). It’s not classified stuff and not stuff that people are looking to steal. I need a way to share it to my other researches and this is the best way to do that. This is an acceptable way to store/share the data to my team.

I’ll see if I can figure that out. Thanks

So I found one article on how to make labels…and the way it told me to do it doesn’t seem to exist. Thanks for trying

The help page that dane22 linked in his first reply shows the process exactly as it currently exists. Is that the page you found?
