I want to export one of my 10 libraries to a new server in the cloud, then I want to export the metadata form my old home server into the new server in the cloud.
The problem is that the video files are home made / custom from various personal projects that I have worked on and are not commercially available to there is no agent that can be used with these files.
On the old server, I inputted the tags and metadata manually, I really cannot do this again as it is now up to about 3000 videos and would take several weeks of mind numbing data entry.
So how can I
- get the metadata for these clips from the old server
- Put this into the database on the new server
- make sure that the metadata matches the files on the new server
If i export the full database from the old server and restore it on the new server, there will be several huge libraries whose files are absent. Will this create problems or can i get away with restoring the database and then quickly delete the unwanted libraries?
Thought, comments and suggestions are all welcome!

a new server in the cloud
Are you using a hosted server or Plex Cloud? Plex Cloud does not give you direct access to the database so you can’t import your info.

For a hosted server, that might be the easiest method. Although the file locations from your old server may not match the path on your hosted server. You can follow the steps in https://support.plex.tv/articles/201154537-move-media-content-to-a-new-location/ to have PMS update the file locations. Make sure you turn off the option to automatically empty the trash before doing the above.
Yeah it´s my own cloud VM which I just installed plex on. ¨Plex cloud¨ the product is utterly unusable for me, I can´t even load a photo on it so can´t even consider using that.
I need to share access to this library with a few people anyway so I am happy with my self hosted solution for now.
I´ll try the link you posted, I have nothing to loose at this point!
This did not work, the new server would not start with the database from the old server.
any other ideas? I suppose i could try manually copying tables from the database but that seem fraught with opportunities to break it.
@“MovieFan.Plex”, do you have any other insights into this? I took the database from the old server, put it on the new server but the new server would not start with it, it did not give me any useful feedback to tell me why either.
Do you think that you could ask one of the developers maybe? ¨how do i export metadata (tags mainly) from one server to another with the same content but with different paths to the content.
This question really needs answering…
