I tried to watch some EyeTV recordings in Plex. All recording were recorded using EyeTV SAT via Astra 28.2 (FreeSat service)
HD channels that are broadcasting in H.264 played really nicely, just as good as in EyeTV.
HD channels that are broadcasting in MPEG2 looked alot worse compared to EyeTV, most likely due to de-interlacing filter.
SD channels broadcasting in MPEG2 had problems even starting up. Looked worse in Plex as well.
With these results even if there was EyeTV plugin developed we would most likely need to wait for new PLex video player. Some of the EyeTV recordings looked really bad in PLex, very choppy, and video did not seem as fluid as in EyeTV.
Interesting. How do you change the streaming quality on your HDTV? It uses jQTouch, which won’t honor mouseclicks? Did you inject javascript?
im talking about using the web browser functionality theyve provided with the new software update (using bonjour). it allows you to set the video bitrate
nice. I’ll take a look.
are you talking about the nettstream ? If so, I only use the software and have an HDHomerun.
I have the same setup - an HD homerun w/ the newest version of Eye TV. I think the service is called Live 3G?

I use safari to watch eyetv on my laptop. the main program is on my mac mini.
Do you set your user agent to iPad? I cannot set the quality in desktop safari mo matter the user agent. Secondly, if you gave hdhomerun, why care about eyetv at all for live tv? Why not use plugin?
I don’t have the option to set the agent as far as I’m aware. I just connect via bonjour, and then right before I select a channel there’s a little gear in the top right of the safari window that lets me set video quality. I’d like an eyetv plugin that would work with the live3G service because it gives you access to your stations (which i’ve customized pretty heavily) and also to your recordings which is nice.
When I use desktop safari, I am not able to click that gear. regardless, I am sure it is some cookie that is set for the value which plugins can handle. Should be interesting to see what I come up with. I’m still busy for the next couple weeks, so It isn’t going to be immediate, but we’ll see what come of it.
awesome. im pumped.
I’m using similar setup. Using my macbook pro for viewing the live stream in Safari. I think the biggest limitation here is that the webapp buffers everytime you switch channels. I.e. you will have to wait (10 seconds) everytime you switch, which means that channel surfing is definatly out of the question. You have to know exactly what you want to watch.
But one cool thing about the webapp is that you have access to the EPG. And as far as I can remeber then also access to schedule recordings…!
It will be a app with some limited capabilites, but at least its integrated…

EDIT: Damn, I confused the app with the web app. Its true that in the app there is EPG, NOT in the webapp.
I agree that using the HDHomerun Plugin is a better solution. Now all we need is a free EPG to go with that!!
Also on the iPhone/iPad eyetv app I get access to Live TV, Recorded, Schedules and Guide. On the Safari interface all I get is Live TV and Recorded.
Hmm I wonder if its worth to setup a packet sniffer to see what kind of communcation protocol the eyetv app uses to talk to the eyetv application. If its XML or similar it might be worth it…
Just started using Plex and I love it. Some sort of TV integration would be great for the free OTA crowd.
But if people need an all in one solution so badly, why not use Media Central + The Tube?
I have the whole equinux suite - Mediacentral, The Tube, Tubestick Hybrid - and let me very kindly say that it sucks. Tubestick is okay, the Tube is minimally functional and Mediacentral - well, the developers haven't done anything with it in three years. I really like the concept behind Mediacentral - Front Row replacement with Skype and live tv integration - but the execution is shoddy and outdated. I'm no programmer and just won't ever be one, but I'm hoping that the open nature of Plex, with its APIs, active development and user involvement will eventually get us there. So, the three big things on my wishlist?
1) Skype - voice or webcam with caller id on the screen and automatic media pause when answered
2) Live TV - seamless integration with anyone's software
3) Parental controls - Not account level, but media folder level with individual PINs for each media folder. So my "Rated R" movies get a different pin than my "Rated PG" ones. And parental control on live TV based on the program guide
I know, wrong thread, but I got on a roll...
The features an promises of Mediacentral are things I would really like to see in Plex. But I agree that Mediacentral is unusable, I’ve tried it before I discovered OSXBMC (later to be Plex)
Boo. I haven’t used MediaCentral or The Tube… good to know.
Plex if def the best media center app I’ve used… it seems like with the web interface, it’ll just take one dedicated programmer to build a plug…
Not sure if this is what you were suggesting but the video format used by eyetv for it’s web app has of course been looked at, by myself as well as others. It’s http live streaming which isn’t supported by the current Plex client.

Hmm. So it seems that the easiest solution might be to just open an EyeTv window, within Plex, and let it do its thing?
What are the options for “seamless” app switching? And some kind of global “back to plex” button?
