[Very Popular] Live TV support in Plex (Media Server)

So this is a feature request for adding Live TV support to Plex.

This could be done by:

  1. Adding the already functioning XBMC PVR support to the Plex Home Theater client (short term).

  2. Or it could be done by implementing “backend” support in Plex Media Server (long term).

For those interested in more discussion on this subject, please see this thread:

Thanks!

that’s non-obvious… no wonder they don’t get many up-votes…

ehhh, the green plus, is your forum Karma.

It has nothing to do with the thread

+1…

… this would be perfect.

Broadcast TV ain’t going anywhere soon, so it would be great to get this feature integrated and say goodbye to Windows Media Center.

I would love to see some streams live as well with plex, would bring a whole new dimension to plex sharing.

? :)

+100 here. When you say " backend" do you mean Mythtvbackend? This is really the best backend due to superior scheduling and tuner management.

+1 Yes. This would be an outstanding addition. Using MCE now but their extenders are expensive/scarce.

+1 I'd like to see it in the backend that makes more sense to me.

I'd agree with this if it were only for back-end support, or for just extending the PMS API to allow PVR "plugins" to extend TV libraries with custom actions/menu options for series, episodes, etc.

Adding PVR to the client, like has been done with Plex Home Theater,  is, IMHO, the wrong direction to peruse.  I signed up for Plex Pass to take a closer look at PHT, and was disappointed to see the direction it took.

If a 3rd party is to be used for PVR integration, it should be through 3rd party plugins to the PMS core.  Existing clients should be able to use most PVR features without modification.  Enhanced features, like grid view for EPG, could be later added to some clients, but should not be a requirement.

I concur about this. I did exactly the same thing and signed up for Plex Pass to find out about livetv support. I too was excited to hear about livetv support and dissappointed to find its client side only. Its great work that the team did on that but the shift is clearly away from powerful client side htpc and boxes.

The power of plex is in the architecture. Ubiquitous clients with a server that serves content to them anywhere anytime.

With more and more people using tablets and mobile devices and the browser client you have to build the features into the server.

I think this is a side effect of pushing feature requests to only Plex Pass members.  It excludes other reasonable ideas and allows poor ones to develop too far.  Not that I'm disparaging the efforts put in to PHT, but it's a dramatic shift from the current architecture that seems to have had little discussion on the ramifications of such a shift.

It would be nice to have a plex developer chime in with their thoughts on extending the API to allow plugins some control over media and menus in the libraries.  Other than my own ramblings, I've seen little talk of this as a solution.   PHT just wont fill the need for a great number of us -- and I believe there are many who are under the wrong impression that it will work because they don't fully understand the situation.

another 1+ for live TV on plex!!! I really love you guys for making this very coolio thingy more cool than it already is... anyway I have primarily signed up to support the Live TV idea on Plex... and when it's there I will love you even more! ;-)

I actually just signed up for PlexPass because of a thread in the non Pass forums saying it was being discussed in the plex forums.  I also figured I could get a sneak peak of the latest GoogleTV version (more on that in another post).  I honestly have no need for the Pass features.  My wife uses plex a lot on on my GoogleTV box and my samsung blu ray player so if I could get a Mythtv LiveTV frontend in plex I'm basically all set for 3 all in one media boxes.  I'd probably want two GTV boxes for my main and spare bedrooms where I only need to downmix'd sound (DTS, AC3, and DTS-MA already handled on my NSZ-GT1, but TrueHD only works if I include a backup AC3 track).  Then for my main tv I would need a device that does bitstreaming of HD audio to my receiver and figure out how to get 3d MVC files handled properly, which currently work fine for 2d viewing my GT1.

Like I said my wife loves plex so just for that subscribing to the Pass seemed like a nice way of saying thanks to the Plex team.  But Mythtv support is something that would be great.
