I don’t have my EyeTv box hooked up anymore, it’s gathering dust somewhere, so I’m not the best person to ask. But, while there’s nothing to allow you to open ‘within Plex’ you can allow Plex to open another application, which will make Plex close before opening the target. Then, when you close that target, Plex will open again. There’s some threads around detailing this with EyeTv I believe.

Hi all,
While I’m a new member to these forums, I have been a keen follower of PLEX, OSXBMC, Media Central, Boxee, EyeTV and several other Media Centers that shall remain nameless for 5+ years.
I’d like to add my voice to the chorus of those that have come before, in praising the PLEX development team’s efforts for what is truly a remarkable achievement (and a shining example of what non-commercial software can achieve).
I offer this praise however in almost the same sentence as asking for more (also as many others have done). I too crave EyeTV integration and the completion of DVD optical media playback, but everything I’ve read so far seems to be missing something that (to me) seems like an obvious and elegant solution.
Keep in mind that while I make this suggestion, I’m coming from the perspective of a complete programming noob… but it seems that the existing EyeTV application and Apple’s implementation of (the now defunct) Front Row provide an interface that shouldn’t be hard to replicate.
It seems that most users (and the PLEX developers I have read) are all happy to use the EyeTV UI. The problem is a lack of elegant switching. Is it not possible to have EyeTV set as a startup item and then be able to load (or call from a hidden state) the PLEX player interface with the Menu button of the Apple remote?
By re-working (or removing) the “exit” menu item from PLEX a user could “drop back out of” PLEX to live TV and when required, easily re-enter PLEX the same way we can now with Front Row.
This (and integrated DVD playback) would be the final pieces in what is clearly the standout leader in HTPC solutions. A simple switching interface that is “Wife & Kids” proof would make PLEX (IMHO) the only viable alternative to running multiple boxes and switching the display from source-to-source depending on what you want to watch.
If I’m missing something (or have hit on an idea that you think will work) I’d be really keen to hear back from you about this suggestion.
Cheers,
Chris.
You might want to try Remote Buddy. They have a free 30 day trial. Set up properly, it can handle what you are trying to accomplish. The only feature that is missing for me is having the recordings from EyeTV automatically added to Plex and notifying Plex to update its library... but that would be an EyeTV feature.
Of course, ideally, I'd like to see support within Plex for live TV and DVR functionality as it would be simpler, more elegant and polished. Then I would just need a way of connecting a tuner to my Synology NAS :-)
Agreed, I'm playing around with "Folder action" scripts that will automatically transcode (and move) live TV recordings into a folder being monitored by PMS. It won't be as instant or tight integration as the Plex developers could do but I will post whatever I come up with.
PS: Have tried, and after a bit of customisation, purchased Remote Buddy. A good work around until Plex can to it better natively.
I wouldn't be holding my breath - but we can continue to hope :-)
Howdy…another newbie here, looking for a replacement for Front Row which has disappeared from the new Apple Lion OS. I am addicted to sitting in my chair with an Apple remote and accessing iTunes-purchased programs and music along with television programs that have been recorded on an EyeTV HD box which Front Row was able to navigate and playback. I use a new i7 Mac Mini as a media center connected to a Sony HD TV via HDMI and if I am watching live TV, I just watch it on the television. I only use EyeTV to record and playback programs and not to actually watch or pause live TV which I can do via the AT&T U-verse cable box with its own DVR and remote.
I have already gone the route of hacking Front Row from a Snow Leopard Mac back to the Lionized new Mini. That doesn’t work with the version of iTunes Lion forces on you. I have even tried downgrading the new Mini OS to Snow Leopard to get Front Row back, but besides a dramatic processing power loss of the new Mini’s capabilities, it also causes the loss of accessing any USB/FW connected external optical drives which work fine under Lion. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

No. That is a scanner feature of Plex. I have that set up on my system. It works perfectly and can send it to you.
The feature I am missing is the ability to control the EyeTV app from within Plex so as not to need to switch between apps. I use the Remote Buddy feature to close one app and open the other when switching between apps. But would be nice to use the EyeTV engine to deliver the video of Live TV and change channels. EyeTV has Applescript commands that allow this. But I don’t know how to create a Plex plugin to add this functionality.
