I’ve been using happily Plex for a long time as free user (I just bought years ago the Android client) but recently I’ve acquired the Plex Pass to support the product and thinking I would take benefit know I’m married and my family will grow. So I though the investment on a lifetime plan would be rewarded.

I’ve created an account to my wife mainly for her music and her photos, because we see the TV shows and movies together, but the following could be applied as well.

I found the process to create a family member confusing and I think I must be doing something wrong or Plex Pass is quite useless if she cannot add her own media (i.e.: add new folders to scan) and make it private just for her (well, I, as admin I need to see at least the folders she have added and the size of them).

I can add in my account the folder he wants, let’s say a folder with photos, and share it with her. But her photos are personal, and I don’t want to have them on my account.
Music is even worse, as we don’t like each other’s music, so I can only create a “Wife’s Music” folder and share with her, but I don’t know if when I want to listen a Random Mix, Plex will grab some of her songs…

The alternative I thought is to use my current account as an “admin” account and put everything (my photos, her photos, my music, her music, all the TV shows and movies) on there and then create another account for me and share from the “admin” account to my new account my music/photos and do the same for my wife’s account. But then, could I connect from my android device? Need to buy it again for my wife’s device or can she download with her google play account and then log in with her free account on Plex (which can only see my Plex server).

On the other hand, I set permissions to her account to upload media (photos?) from what I suppose is her smartphone, but again, she cannot create any library, so I cannot see how or where she is supposed to upload anything.

Any idea how to accomplish all of this?

  • Let user create/add new libraries
  • Android app to family members
  • Upload images from mobile devices

  1. Only the admin can create libraries. If you want her to be able to have her own private stuff, she would need to have her own server setup for her to administer. For your server, your account is the only one with admin rights and all libraries are viewable by the admin.
  2. Plex Pass gives Plex Home members access to mobile apps. You would need to add people to your Plex Home. You can find this information here. If your wife decides to setup her own server, make sure to read the Consequences of Being in a Plex Home as well.

Thank you @Nights0ng, I will dig deeper, but the short way seems to use my account as “admin”, just to add all libraries, and then create as many home users as people in my home, to see our related media (music and photos). Movies and TV Shows are a bit difficult to do it right, as we share many TV Shows and movies, but I will think a way to have a common Movies and TV Shows and the a set of custom libraries to each of us, so I don’t even see all those Grey’s Anatomy and so in my library and she won’t see my geek series either :stuck_out_tongue:
