Plex Pass for Family

I was reading about the Plex Pass and I have one question I couldn’t get an answer with so I’m coming to the forums.

I have the media server installed and serving all of my media to my Android mobile device. I haven’t purchased anything yet so I still have the 1 minute and watermark limitations. I was considering purchasing the one-time payment for the Plex Pass just to be able to use everything.

If I do that though, will my family be able to play without any limitations even though they didn’t buy the Plex Pass or activate via their respective mobile app store? I don’t want to log into their mobile devices using my account (which holds the Plex Pass) - I’d like them to use their own accounts.

In short - if I purchase the Plex Pass, do my family members still have to activate their Plex Players separately to play my media without any limitations?

I already read this page - I came to this forum because I wasn’t sure if I understood it correctly.

A Plex Pass regardless of which term you get ( monthly, yearly, lifetime has the same features)

They do not need to pay for the app if they are in your Plex Home.

If you have a Plex Pass your account can add other Plex accounts to your Plex Home.

They make a regular free Plex account and you invite that existing user Plex account to your Plex Home and share with them the libraries on your Plex Media Server that you want. They just sign into the app and it will recognize that they are in your Plex Home.

the other type of account in a Plex Home is a Managed Users account. these are generally only used for children. They do not have emails or passwords. If your child wants to use Plex on their phone you physically take the phone from them, sign into it with your account then switch to their account and hand the phone back to them. In this manner you control what device they use, they cannot give their password to their friends and random people on the internet cannot share with them.

In either case you as the administrator should put a PIN on your account so it is required when using the user switcher in any of the apps so folks cannot switch to you. (on your own devices like your personal cell phone no one uses but yourself. You can have it skip the PIN when you open the app)

If you have a Plex Pass you can set up Plex Home for sharing content.

A Plex Pass unlocks the mobile apps for users in your Plex Home.

Users in your Plex Home can use their own Plex.tv account, so they do not need your Plex userid/password.

See What is Plex Home? for more info.

Note a Plex Home is limited to 15 accounts. Also, a user can only be part of one Plex Home, so if they have their own, they cannot be part of yours.

Thanks BigWheel and FordGuy61 - that was the answer I was hoping to get. I’ll probably decide whether to get the lifetime pass within the week. I’m still in the fence about Plex vs Kodi at the moment. I’m still playing around both apps to see which one to go for.

Thanks again for the answer and your examples!
