They way that I am managing Fan Edits is by utilizing Plex’s feature of “Extras” for Movies - outlined here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220677-Local-Media-Assets-Movies - you want to scroll down to the “Local Trailers and Extras” section. I’ve been putting fan edits as Featurettes for the original movie. So in the case of Harmy’s Despecialized Editions, I have each movie with its respective 2011 Blu-Ray release as the master index movie.
There are, however, a few downsides with this approach.
- Currently, Plex doesn’t allow you to add poster images, descriptions, etc to these features, thus losing and plot/edit notes from the editor on the fan edit, which I personally think is a nice thing to have.
- Fan edits that span multiple movies, you have you make a decision on which movie you want to make the “master.” Such as, Derelict or Man of Tomorrow, which bring multiple movies of a franchise into a build a better narrative.
Have you seen the IFDB scraper? I wonder if using this would help keep things separate. Of course, plug-in support is going away, so may not be useful for long.
