The new look apps have generally adopted a similar, unified appearance and interface for Plex. The apps are all in a "preview" status and works in progress, but there has been a decision to blur fanart and background images, often to the point where the images are blotches of colour in the background. Sometimes, the images are hard to recognize as any kind of reference to the movie.
While we may (or may not) appreciate the effort to reduce the "gloomy" appearance the traditional apps might have, and the reasons the decision was made, many users may find the blurry images equally distracting and disappointing.
This request is to return to sharper images (possibly less blurred, dimmed, etc) and /or give users the option to choose the quality of background/fanart.
Don’t need any blur, would rather have a nice clear image just like PHT and many other clients. For people like myself that spend the time choosing the fanart for each title, it would be nice to be able to see it and enjoy it.
The question begs to be asked. Who thought of this as an option anyone would want? At this point my WD Live TV does a better job. I don't see netflix doing this.
When can we have this fixed or given as a customizable option as suggested above.
Don't forget to "Like" the first post in this thread. (If you agree, that is, that the blurry, background splotches in the Roku Preview client were a bad idea...)
Um, hate to tell you guys but PHT just got ''blur''
 Actually, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if PHT finds itself blurred one day. I seldom use it (no mouse support kills me) but the version I have still has nice sharp background images, just dimmed or darkened to make the text legible.
If it does happen, I'll consider getting the title of the feature request changed to include PHT, and get rid of the extra "on" in the current title at the same time
Personally, I'd prefer no background image at all. I actually wrote up a request for Artist settings, but I'd like to be able to do it globally, or per library.
I agree the blur is horrible. I went through my whole library on the computer picking awesome background images. It looks great on the PC when looking through movies but then when I go to my Smart TV or Playstation the background images are barely recognizable. Keep them clear or make it an option for sure!
Would someone officially employed by Plex PLEASE explain the reason why the fanart/background images are being ruined? Blurred, splotchy, unrecognizable? WHY? What is the reasoning? It's horrible, and there is no reason to code a "selection" capability. Just return to the methods used by EVERY streaming application including Netflix, Amazon and everybody else. To my knowledge NOBODY is ruining the fanart/background experience like Plex is doing. I vote NO.

There are several responses from Schuyler (Plex employee) in the thread that you started about this in the Plex for Roku Preview forum that answer your questions.

I realize that. But that was early in the thread and since then no one from Plex has stooped to add anything more. In the face of such disapproval from serious users Plex has been silent. There's something fishy about being this hard-headed about a bad decision.
I'm hopeful that Plex is listening, and will give us at least some degree of control over the background art. There's a post in the Playstation section of the forums here: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/154213-ps4-cover-quality/#entry894343 that makes me think they have heard the complaints.
It is a mystery that we are given the option to select fanart and backgrounds, or in some cases (like me) create our own, and then have the artwork distorted so that our choices become completely irrelevant. I'm sort of hoping they blur the heck out of the background art in the default Plex Home Theater skin - maybe we'll hear from a few more disgruntled users.
I agree that Plex should give us some control over the blurring effect, but I have to say, blurring the background isn't an unreasonable, or even a new, idea. There are apps that you can buy for the specific purpose of blurring images. The CSS specification actually provides a filter to apply a blur to images. Here's a website that demonstrates it, where you can play with it.
So, no matter how vehemently you dislike the feature or disagree with how it is implemented, claims of "disaster" or "ruin" are just a tad overblown, in my opinion.
