This is absolutely weird. I am using Alexa to stream music at random from my Plex Media Server. I have a LOT of music on there. I have listened for a couple hours, and it’s one of the best random streaming music experiences, ie, Spotify Shuffle, Amazon Prime Unlimited, etc., I have ever had. It’s my library, so obviously I like most of the songs on it. But what is the logic that’s being used? With the exception of a few Christmas songs thrown in (it’s Jan. 26th), this thing is playing only all great songs. No random filler, and lots and lots of hits. It’s eerie, but in a very good way. Loving this!
short answer: i have no idea.
but i am also very interested in how the algorithm works.
my observation is that plex apparently uses some web database (tidal or last.fm maybe) to determine the popularity of songs as usually it seems to me that the more popular one are being played. after all plex even lists the most popular songs from the selected artist.
but the catch is the following:
- the library station repeatedly throws in songs from single albums i have from an artist. since listening to the library station i have heard a lot of tracks from Blackmore’s Night, Manowar, Ajattara, Silencer, Arbeit or Lustmord. Which is not bad, but there’s a reason i have only 1 album from these performers in my collection.
- on the other hand, my collection counts 34 releases from Porcupine Tree, 15 from Dream Theater, 13 from Riverside and i have never heard a single song from these in the library radio (or maybe a few, but definitely not representing their share in my collection).
so i if somebody has an idea how this algorithm works i would be glad to hear it
I have gotten more into calling out individual songs, artists and albums, now that I figured out how to do that using Alexa. Aleska, ask Plex to play… Seems to be working. Haven’t used Library Radio as often.
