Fast forward and rewind crashes app

This is on Chromecast with Google TV dongle. When you try and fast forward and rewind it kicks you out and restarts the Plex app. Sometimes it will let you fast forward a few clicks. But a lot of the time it will only let you click a couple of times. I have a fast wireless connection. Plex server is a docker on Unraid and it is updated. This just started recently.

Same here, just started yesterday. Seems to be OK with recorded SD content. Anything HD, recorded or live, trying to FF/RW reboots the Plex app. I checked yesterday for an update to the Chrome cast with Google TV and there was. But unfortunately the issue exists. It worked perfectly up until a few days ago. This is driving me crazy. - Joel

Edit:

Plex server is on a new Synology DS920+ running DSM 7.

I think it may be caused by slow HDD. This is just a guess. The only problem with this is I would think it would buffer and NOT kick it out of the app. My server being on an Unraid NAS, it would make sense. I need to do some testing and move the DVR to the SSD cache. I found if you go slow with the FF it would work fine. Give it about 10 seconds between FF attempts, it does not always kick you out.

I have noticed the same behavior with FF/RW. Going deliberately slow, the app doesn’t reboot. On the other hand, I have also seen my Chromecast reboot the launcher doing nothing but playing live TV. I do believe though it is related to the Plex app or something Google did. I reinstalled the HDHomerun Google TV app and can watch live TV for hours. Full disclosure though, I didn’t install the Silicon Dust DVR to test the trick play (I don’t plan on going back). I have no issues with the Plex app on my MiBox S or my Shield TV (on different TV’s). From some short testing everything is fine on those devices (except the fact that Xiaomi broke some HD playback in a firmware update a long time ago).

I was running my Plex DVR on a WD EX2 Ultra NAS with an ARM processor and didn’t have any issues. I just moved to this new Synology NAS last weekend, plenty of horsepower there. In my case it could be an issue with the new DSM 7 firmware that was released recently. I know that led the Plex developers into having to make some major changes just to get the PMS to function at all.

Hopefully someone will see this thread and give some advice. -Joel

Tried the SSD and no change and I about to give up on Plex and switch to HDhomerun’s service. It’s cheap and I have a year to test it.

Same here. Experiencing same symptoms as OP on same device. Started happening recently.

Just wanted to chime in with a “me too”.
I notice that the Plex app restarts on my “Chromecast with Google TV” when I skip ahead or back using the Plex DVR function.
I’ll be watching this forum, hopefully a solution will emerge.

I really think that Plex is doing this on purpose. I have two chromecast with google TV and they both do the same thing to the letter. Someone out there prove me wrong.

I’m having a similar issue.

I’ll be happily casting away, and want to pause or something, so I re-open the Plex app. My casting then crashes completely.

I’m using Plex on my iPhone and a Google Chromecast.

It’s not the end of the world, I just have to restart the cast, but it’s frustrating. I find little glitches like this happen every now and again and never last too long, perhaps an unintentional side effect of a change to the app somewhere else. The work around isn’t too bad. Hoping it’s fixed with an update soon.

I’m not casting, but I am using the Chromecast with Google TV. I’ve given up, I’m going to use Emby for viewing my Plex recordings. Emby works perfectly when fast-forwarding and rewinding. Setup the server, and the app. May switch 100%, eventually, we will see.

Keeping this thread alive. I got around to recording nfl playoff games which I skip a lot and can confirm that google tv crashes after skipping multiple times. I have to go back in and then can scrub but it will crash again if you do it a few times.
iPhone 11 runs perfect, scrubs like crazy and doesn’t crash.
Vizio SmartCast stutters on anything greater than 720p but doesn’t crash.

server is an old Hp dc7800 running Ubuntu with a ssd OS and a 1TB hd holding the shows. It used to be my WMC before that got EOLd

I gave up on this to try and fix it. I tried out Emby and my recordings work perfectly. Fast forward, rewind no issues. I just wish I didn’t have to spend another $120 to use Emby on Chromecast with Google TV. But, if I cast Plex from my tablet, to the Chromecast, again everything works perfectly. So, the CCwGTV app is broken. And Plex seems to not care, or they want you to watch the commercials. This sucks, if I didn’t have money invested into Plex, I would drop it and switch to Emby.

Just adding to the pile here. I don’t have this problem on a web browser or my Roku TV but our bedroom has a Chromecast with Google TV and it crashes after skipping more than once in a ten second period.

I am also having the same issue and have been having it for awhile with my Chromecast devices with Google TV. Constant crashing when skipping. Sometimes skipping seems to work fine but then will crash a short duration after starting play again. It doesn’t matter if the Chromecast device is hardwired to my network or connected over WIFI, the same consistently happens with every Chromecast device, every day.

ditto. someone please reach out for logs.
@anon18523487 example of just one android tv issue that just started to rear itself.

The app is broken, simple. And it is Google TV app.

Consistent crashing on rewind and forward. Version 8.29.1. Fast forwarded a few minutes, and it worked fine. About 30 secs later it just restarted. Rewinding also leads to crashes. This has been going on for several months. I have crash reporting turned on. Need any more info?

I don’t think it matters. Plex Support doesn’t seem to care. I’ve also seen a few others complain about the Android app. We just deal with it and watch commercials.

I’ll add a me too to this thread. Google TV, constant crashing of recorded shows. Most of the shows are 1080i. Found this line in the logs right before the crash:

Same is happening to me with CCGTV. It happens both when I skip adds, and skip forward on OTA DVR recordings.
