Plex restarts new Google TV Chromecast

So this started happening over the past couple days. I am watching a show on Plex on the new Chromecast with Google TV and it has a really annoying issue:

  1. Play an episode
  2. Start next episode
  3. Video is zoomed in and stretched out
  4. Hit back on the chromecast (or home)
  5. Chromecast freezes up and has to restart.

Has anyone else seen this issue? Is there a fix?

Plex version: 1.22.3.4392
Chromecast up to date (can’t find the version).

I have the EXACT same issue. Seems to happen on HVEC shows only from my limited testing. :frowning:

Unfortunately I’m dealing with this too, it has made my Google TV unusable. There’s another thread here, combined with a second problem as well (which I’m also seeing). So far no devs have replied.

Seems it’s directly related to the x265 encoding, but only on the autoplay feature and not on the player in general. I’ll test mine to see if it’s a certain resolution or not.

I’ve seen it at 480p and 1080p, both HEVC.

We’re tracking this internally now

Appreciate the response! Looking forward to a solution in the future.

I am having this exact same issue on Chromecast with Google TV. Software on the Chromecast was updated yesterday (april 2021 update). 4k HEVC video starts playing stretched out, then if I back out of video the Chromecast reboots.

I have the same problem. After each episode I press home and go to settings and force stop Plex. A lot faster than having to wait for the chromecast to reboot.

I have the same issue - however my Google TV doesn’t seem to freeze or restart. Pressing back and playing the next video from the library is fine.

This is happening for me as well. Doesn’t matter what type of codec or resolution.

Also for a few months, videos don’t go to next on the playlist (or shuffle) and shows a blank screen with the time slider continuing showing time remaining into negative values.

Think your secondary issue warrants a new topic, but I have that issue, though I can’t figure out what seems to cause it. Mine happens on Roku and Chromecast and is seemingly random.

I see this issue constantly. When shows hit the end credits, I hit the back button twice, and manually open the next episode.

I get the graphical issue of 1/4 of the image being displayed across my entire screen, backing out causes the entire chromecast to crash and reboot, and I have to force close the plex app to enable user switching again.

I’m having the exact same issue w/ Plex on two different Chromecast devices. I thought this was purely a pre-roll issue but I experience the same when auto-advancing (when that actually WORKS) to the next episode in a series.

I love the Chromecast but Plex has been, at least, unstable, on it since release. I can play the exact same content on the Roku attached to the same TV or even use it’s built-in app without issue.

so i haven’t wanted or needed to use kodi in years, and i have to say i find it slightly annoying to have to load a program just to load a program.

that said, i can confirm this is working so far so good.

and i don’t mind getting the kodi extra video and audio options back (mostly the audio boosting is better).

note - there is at least one weird setting you have to enable HEVC in the settings of the plex for kodi otherwise it will automatically transcode anything 1080 or above

  • and its a bit slow, to start the stream or if you make a change to the settings. thinks about it a for a bit before getting going again.

    • i timed it and it takes ~44 sec to do anything, such as enabling or disabling SRT subtitles or changing your aspect ratio.

the aspect ratio thing is especially weird cause you can see it do it instantly behind the kodi menu but then when you exit the menu it stops and restarts the stream taking another 40+ sec.

Hey, don’t mean to bug you about this, but has there been any progress? Hoping to go back to using my Chromecast instead of my Roku.

Also very interested in learning any progress. Not being able to shuffle a show is a bigger inconvenience than I’d have thought.

For me, it was fine in 8.15… it was 8.16 that introduced this bug :frowning:

Seems to only occur when media isn’t playing from it’s own “main page”. i.e. I’ve also found this also happens for HVEC movies, not just TV shows!

Here’s an example:

Let’s say I’m watching Scary Movie in HVEC format (and I have the entire series of that movie collection). When the movie finishes, it returns to the “Just Played” screen, showing the movie just watched (Scary Movie, obviously).

Under that is a “RELATED MOVIES” list… and of course it has the rest of the Scary Movies listed there. So I click on “Scary Movie 2”. It doesn’t take you to the Scary Movie 2 page, it will instead immediately play the movie.

It’ll usually throw an error, then 10-15 seconds later cause the Chromecast TV to crash/reboot itself.

I’m guessing the code functionality here is similar to the TV series issue as it’s auto-playing media. Perhaps the new exoplayer isn’t being initialised correctly when auto-playing media?

I literally just bought the Google Chromecast with Google TV 2 days ago just to use Plex as i was using another device with Kodi before that. I went through the pain stacking process of getting all my tv shows and movies in order (had to rename a crap ton of them because Plex didnt like the naming convention). Took me about 5 hours to get everything set up and ready to go, sat down, watched a show and when the next episode went to play, the whole thing crashed. You can imagine how upset that made me.
